Is there anyone in Ansteorra (or otherwise) that is going to 12 Night on January 5th with their clan or household? I was trying to find a household and I know I need to be known before joining in most cases and that is the next event I'm going to. I'm in The Fray, which is a household, but I thought it would be beneficial to join a japanese oriented clan/household also.

You don't need to be part of a household or clan - unless you want to. They have no "official" purpose in the SCA. They just are.
I live in an area where there are very few Japanese personae, so aligning myself with a Japanese household isn't even an issue for me anyway.
Some households are better than others. I did the household thing for my ex and most of the "children" never reimbursed me for groceries or offered to wash so much as a stinking dish unless I leaned on my ex about it and he leaned on them. No leaning should have been necessary in the first place. I would think long and hard before accepting an invitation to join someone's household.
Your mileage may vary.

Ayaka-hime, What Saionji no Hanae is saying is very true, but it is very nice to be a part of something within the SCA, specially if it's a japanese household and is well orginized. I also agree with the fact that in the other hand if it's not well orginized the chances are someone will be getting the better hand. I will risk it and say that base on the japanese honor system, a japanese clan would be most amazing and inspiring; check Yama Kaminari on thier web-site, they are in the east coast and are (to me) the greatest SCA japanese group, they really are hard to join but it is worth it.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! I am in one with my family and their friends...but I think it would be beneficial to join a Japanese clan...it would be nice...I'd have other obligations besides The Fray and that would be good...some of those vikings scare me....lol While are there some really wonderful households out there, there are also abusive households. You should wait at least a year after entering the Society before joining a household. You should also try to check out your prospective household a bit before joining.

I've been with the sca a while. I had a french persona originally, and I would much rather be Japanese for various reasons.

I had, at one time, dreams of founding a japanese household in Ansteorra, with the stated goal of having fun, and furthering the practice of japanese persona in the SCA. Then i sobered up, and realized I would have been totally out of my depth, now I just spend my time praying that one of the Kaminari moves to Ansteorra, and survives the heat..........

I had, at one time, dreams of founding a japanese household in Ansteorra, with the stated goal of having fun, and furthering the practice of japanese persona in the SCA. I am but a weak and feeble woman. I have no clan. I have no other Nihonjin really local to me. Those Nihonjin who do reside in the kingdom are few and far flung and may do as they do because I have no control over anyone's SCA karma but my own. I am an emissary among the namban. Within the limits of my skills, time, budget and abilities, I am an example. I am an army of one. Saionji no Hanae

On the other hand, I have LOTS of allies. I found myself thinking about this when I went on my walk today. As many of you know, I also have a European persona. Being Jehanne is MUCH easier than being Saionji. The resources are there in languages I can read, the merchants cater to my market niche, and being late 13th century English is pretty mainstream. I have been smiling a lot at some of my memories of this year's Estrella. Yagyu-dono's party. Seeing Moira leading Yoshi-dono down Laurel Wreath Way towards the BC. Picking confetti out of my hair the morning AFTER Yagyu-dono's party. Pretty much any time spent with Our Moderator on basic general principle - and I didn't actually SEE Tetsubin-do. Laughing at Li and his nasty Chinese wine. Listening to Saito-dono tell a tale of a ghost and a well and a missing plate and thinking I must learn that one to tell others. I've been lucky enough to travel a bit over the past couple of years and get to meet a number of my Japanese brethren in different kingdoms. Each and every time it has been an honor and a delight. Not to mention humbling: I am not sure how I acquired the reputation I have because a lot of you seem to think I know more than I do. Maybe it's because we are a minority in a Eurocentric game. Maybe because it's easy to pick out the silhouette of a guy in hakama and kosode in the dark and hope he's headed to the same party you are. We may not all have clans, but we have a community.

We may not all have clans, but we have a community. That is a beautiful thought... I second that emotion.
