Did you find the dried fruit? I am going to have to look for Hachiya persimmons in the market. They're usually harvested by now.

Fuyu persimmons aren't harvested until November. Persimmons are a mid to late fall fruit. Did you find the dried fruit? No, they were fresh and they had labels on them like every other piece of fruit these days that said "Fuyu." It was the Lucky's in El Cerrito. I bought one. I ate it. I did not imagine it, honest. Pics are up of my spiffy, lakeside accomodations. The neighbors were a mite noisy and had a tendency to try to mooch unattended food from people's campsites. More at: www.flickr.com/photos/70104978@N00/sets/72157602308190120/I got in late Thursday evening after driving down from work. The directional kami ate one of my barely-a-year-old tires by sending something large, black and solid bouncing across the freeway just north of Westley. I got across two lanes of traffic and onto the shoulder, a man pulled over right behind me as I was digging my jack and helped me get the tire changed, so I was not overly delayed. Set up in the dark, then joined the gathering in West Kingdom camp under the torches, where I met Tatsuya-dono and some of his friends. Spent most of my daylight hours as Jehanne and did quite a lot of busking in Merchant's Row all weekend. I don't normally put out a bowl or hat - this is my hobby, after all. I figured since I have a tire to replace, though, that I might as well. Netted about $33 for the weekend and not only didn't overstay my welcome, had merchants begging me to come back and play for them. I had a very nice turnout for the sake tasting. Mostly friends, or friends of friends, plus one couple who came because they saw one of the privy posts. I have decided that Berkeley's own Sho Chiku Bai nigorizake is a keeper if one likes sweet and silky sake. The Choya umeshu (plum liqueur) has revised my opinion of plum wine and received a happy thumbs up from all of the guests who tried it. Sweet, yes, but with a tart underlayer that I rather liked - and the whole plum in marinating in the bottom of the jar will free your mind, Neo. (I will make sure I have some of this stuff along at Estrella.) Tatsuya-dono was delayed unavoidably by household business and unfortunately arrived after my guests had gone for the evening. I am awed and touched his thoughtfulness. He presented me with a stunning black lacquer jubako (stacking boxes, complete with several serving dishes built into the lid), one tray filled with beautiful sweets that look too pretty to eat, the other with a nice mix of wasabi peas, sesame peanuts, rice crackery things and so forth. I did not get to serve these at war, so I will take them into work this week so that they do not go to waste. Domo arigato, tomodachi! I hope to reciprocate properly at Estrella. Judging from conversations I had with folks who go to GWW regularly, this one was rather lightly attended. Now that it's north of the Grapevine, some of the folks coming out from points south and east may have felt it was too far to come. However, the new war site is lovely. Reasonable access from I-5, grassy camping areas, trees, potable water onsite, flushies as well as portables. The park is long and narrow, so depending on where one ends up camping, one may have to walk a bit to get places, but did I mention the lake? I watched cranes taking off and landing this morning while I sat on my "veranda" eating breakfast this morning. I also got a compliment from His Grace, Duke Jade, this morning, on how lovely my pavilion looked with the Tosenin kosode hanging out front. (High winds on Saturday afternoon took out the Monkey Scroll, which tore along the top dowel. I can probably repair the tears by gluing it to some bookbinding canvas.)

Welcome home, Makiwara-Hime. I'm glad you had a nice time. The pictures are wonderful and the sunset pictures were absolutely stunning.

Was he dressed in a(admittedly) not period black kimono with white?!? It is good to hear you made it home without incident. Katayama P.S. You have a PM...

Actually, "Jehanne" was admiring the motif on the kimono earlier in the day when I saw you wandering around the Merchant Village. I am so pleased everyone enjoyed the gathering.

I deeply regret being unable to attend an evening of sake tasting in the company of new friends. I had looked forward to that gathering for some time now. However, as Hanae-hime had mentioned, I was unavoidably detained. In addition to the gift I had brought, I had hoped to share a few more things with everyone but they will have to wait until next time. Hopefully that will be Estrella. edit: The sweets were from Fugetsu-do in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles) which is celebrating it's 100th anniversary.

That picture just stopped me in my tracks. You'd never know there was a row of dome tents just to the left of frame, would you? It's no wonder I was still setting things out when my guests arrived. That sunset was too good not to stop and admire. One of our fighter guys came over as my party was getting underway. It was dark by then. Some late arrivals needed a place to pitch a tent. "I'm afraid we're going to have to spoil your view." "That's OK," I told him. "I got my sunset." And it didn't really spoil the view much.

Inquiring minds want to know.... - Rich

Shipping alchoholic products through the US mail is illegal. YOU get to do the research to find out whether UPS or Fedex will ship alcohol from California to Illinois. I should mention that Takara has distributors in your state and it may be easier for you to buy direct: www.takarasake.com/distributors/distributors.htm
