I'm planning to head up to Kingdom Crusades this weekend. In preparation I'm trying to get my kit looking decent--it still needs a lot of work:
* The gauntlets are back together with a new leather strap.
* I have a pattern for kegutsu 'spats' that I can throw over more modern shoes. I'm hoping this could be a way to have the look of kegutsu with the integrity of a modern shoe, for places where that is required.
* I've painted the spun-top I have black and will be working on trying to get a false shikoro on it to disguise it somewhat. I'm also bringing up a tate-eboshi parade helm (it would probably work for SCA combat if I made a good mempo and protected the back of my head). I'm also borrowing a helm from Hiraizumi-dono that might be an alternative, but it is extremely heavy, and the mempo doesn't sit in all that well, though it is beautiful. Since there isn't really a chin strap on it (because the mempo doesn't sit fully on the face) I'm concerned about movement and not sure it will pass inspection. So far, though, I can barely feel any blow delivered to it.
* I think I have a solution for knees in the form of some MX knees that the local regional warlord has been using--they move wonderfully, and should be good as long as they are kept hidden.
* I need to redo my kote a little so that I can wear them properly. Shouldn't be too much of an issue, though I'm debating between an i-gote style harness, where they are individually strapped on, or a small cheat whereby they are tied together with a little bit of elastic. Unfortunately, they were intended to attach to the watagami, but since I made the watagami floating (I didn't know what I was doing when I first made the do), that doesn't work too well these days (also, some of my toggles have blown and I've had to tie the sode onto the watagami directly). Hopefully, this will be the last combat this particular suit sees.
So, that has taken precedence over the other projects I have, which include a plastic o-yoroi. For that, I have patterned out the sune-ate pieces, but need the add all of the little metal pieces (e.g. fukurin, hinges, etc.). I also have some pieces cut out for some yoshitsune-gote. I'm thinking of a guruwa for the gorget, and probably a simple, early-period helm of 12-16 plates with a full somen.
Now I just have to find the time...
