This year's Taiga Drama (Atsuhime, set during the last years of the Edo period) has finally ended and the new one, Tenchijin, is due to start on January 4th in Japan. Taiga dramas are usually broadcast with English subtitles in parts of California and Hawaii, and usually run 4 to 6 weeks behind the Japanese airing. Tenchijin is based off a novel of the same name and is about the life of Kanetsugu Naoe (1560-1620), who served Uesugi Kenshin. So it's back to the Sengoku jidai! The main page for the drama is here. It will star pretty guy Tsumabuki Satoshi, who at least can act, although most of the parts I've seen him in mainly have him pouting a great deal. Alas, singer Gackt will NOT be reprising his role of Uesugi Kenshin--that honor goes to Abe Hiroshi, who must be one of Japan's hardest-working actors, as he has been in almost everything. There is some translated info about the characters in English here and a dramawiki page set up here, also in English. Oh, and here is a preview someone posted on youtube. Taiga dramas run for a full year (usually 49 hour-long episodes or so) and usually have great production values and excellent costumes. Check it out, if you get the chance!
