Emperor Akihito leaves the Kashikodokoro shrine within the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo on April 30 after completing a formal ceremony related to his abdication. (Asahi Shimbun) I am not sure if the color of his sokutai is an expression of his rank, or if it denotes a bukan sokutai (military) as opposed to bunkan (aristocratic) sokutai. Note also the tall upstanding tail on his kanmuri.

Greetings,
The colour of the (now) retired emperor's ho (I think it isn't a sokutai but a ho, given the lack of hirao and other accoutrements) is called korozen, and is meant to represent the colour of the sun at midday. This colour is very much an expression of his rank, as it is reserved for the use of the reigning emperor only to my knowledge. It therefore would be incredibly impolite and presumptuous for anyone but the reigning emperor to wear this colour.
Korozen can be produced by dyeing the fabric with a combination of sappanwood and the leaves or leaf stalks of Cotinus coggygria, the dyer's sumach. That being said, I'm not sure if synthetic dyes has replaced this formulation in actual use.

Ii dono! Greetings from Solveig! I appreciate the confidence, but the patterned black hou and the patterned uenohakama, along with the excessively long kyou (have I mentioned how I really like the kyou?) would all be well out of reach of a 6th rank courtier. There is a LOT of controversy about how to translate Society ranks. Let's see. You are a Master of the Laurel. In the world of Heian-kyō we might try to slot you into the 大学寮 Daigakuryō. The 文章博士 Monjō-hakase (professor of literature) enjoyed Rank 5 status which was sufficient for audiences with the emperor. However, you could easily hold a higher office with corresponding higher rank in one of the ministries of the left or possibly that somewhat abbreviated middle. The Nihongi records imperial audiences with various scholars of which class you belong. I could not see the patterning of the black silk in the photograph. Even then, as you know, patterning is quite acceptable for your rank. It depends entirely upon what pattern you are using. The back side does not count. That is where everybody cheated on the sumptuary rules and uniform standards. However, I agree that the length may be a bit above your station. Recall the picture of the courtiers on the veranda with their trains hanging over the railing. They can be pretty long even for those who are not of sufficient rank to enjoy an imperial audience.

Emperor Akihito leaves the Kashikodokoro shrine within the Imperial Palace grounds in Tokyo on April 30 after completing a formal ceremony related to his abdication. Please - He is the Heisei Emperor. Emperors are generally referred to by their regnal names. Or at least that is how things have worked since 1868. Incidentally, the Reiwa Emperor has at least one more major enthronement ceremony to go. For that matter, there is a tendency to avoid using names of superiors in Japan. So, it is more likely to hear people talking about Tennō-heika.
