So it's been a while since I reported anything. My last project (as some may or may not remember) was a Go-Mai Haramaki out of Kozane. The project itself never came to fruition. However it was a wonderful learning tool. I intend to go back to it in hopes to do it justice in the near future. Since that project I had worked on two other projects. One was a Sugake Okegawa Ni-mai dou. It was made of a spray painted (lacqured look) aluminum. I loved it, but then, I thought to myself "the paint chips" and "there is so much more variation!" so I came to my next project. This is the project that I am talking about. It is a Dangae Okegawa Ni-Mai Do. It was based off this model from Jo Anseeuw's pictures: I love the omodaka odoshi style, and to be honest I've never seen it in the SCA, now I may be COMPLETELY wrong. But I hope that this unveiling of my project will be one of the first of it's kind to grace this board. Now keep in mind this armour is meant for combat, but can be dress armour also. The base material is Kydex (sorry about the plastic for you purist enthusiasts out there) The reason for this is because I can't STAND the chipping on the aluminum. I would love to stick to metal of some sort, but Kydex will keep the colour. I would eventually love to add some egawa to the entire thing. Unfortunately This is only the front part of the dou, the back parts are still being made. I hope you all enjoy this as much as I do, and I also hope to hear some critiques to further improve when I start making a new suit (because it won't be long before I start a new one) Without further to do: Cheers! ~Honda Augustine Minamoto (August Tang)

Those are sode jiruchi and have a history dating at least as far back as the 1200's. Frequently conceived on short notice, (for 13th cent. security...) they were used to identify people from one adventure as opposed to another team. Taiheiki is rife with refs to them, as well as kasa jiruchi. At the Soma no ma oi they use them to consistently identify the riders I wear a so called "Death Poem" or motto on mine that reads - "Shi wa hei to de aru" (loosely translated as "All are equal in the grave"...A reminder to high and low ;-)) Sashimono are not period for the rig or persona I wear - namely as one who rides in the defense of the Emperor GoDaigo in the 1330's.
Your Dangae Dô is looking mighty good - I like the gold edging - how did you do that, may one ask? Date

You will certainly be the envy of the other kids on the block. Now please forgive me for picking nits but are the upper lame's (the ones laced kebiki odoshi) just a wee bit narrow?!? Again, nice job thus far. Now let's see the rest of it!!! Katayama

Do you have images of you with the do on from the side? Id like to see what ends where (ie where the front ends and the sides begin)
Also, is it me or does it seem like many do's leave the lower part of the midsection totally open to eviscerating slashes/stabs?
The area between the bottom of the do and the top of the kusazuri seem to only be covered by lacing in many reconstructions (both LH and museum pieces)

the upper tatege is made from 10" lames, the reason it may look narrow is because: 1. I'm a very broad chested person (so maybe I should have made them bigger) and 2. Due to the curvature of the plates it would seem a bit smaller than usual. but they are 10" which I think is the standard....
It is car door edging as found in any auto-zone.
I will post them in a moment or two.
It's actually "gold" door trim, but it turns out "brass" looking.
Yeah, that kind of gets to me also, but if you look at the classic western globose breastplate it also did not originally cover the lower stomach. From what I remember from Eff's site, its because that is where the body naturally bends. (one inch or so beneath the belly button) So we end the plate to allow for that bending. (I may be wrong)

Wow. NICE work.
Not the least because it happens to be *very* close to the combat armour I'm planning for myself. I am a big fan of dangae dô.
I really like how in the past few months the bar on lame-based Japanese armours has been raising higher and higher.

I really like how in the past few months the bar on lame-based Japanese armours has been raising higher and higher. I agree and that is in no small part due to your website and the advice you're providing *here*. Now to just get them hats and on the field. Speaking of which, I'm going back to full-time metalworking next week, so those who've been hoping for hats will have opportunities soon. Of course, August already has a hat, but other folks need one.

Nah, the website has been around for a while.
It's just that people are getting more conscientious and determined to do it *right*.
