Of possible interest, airing on PBS this month. I stumbled upon this program on one of the local PBS affiliates this evening, about 15 minutes into the broadcast. Colleen Quen and Jude Gabbard, two young Bay Area fashion designers, visited rural Guizhou Province, learning about embroidery, batik resist dyeying, silversmithing and other elements of the traditional dress of the native Buyi and Miao villagers. Check out this link from the production company, D3 for additional photos and information. www.d3mediagroup.com/programs/fashion.htmAnd then they came home and did this: www.ibabuzz.com/fashion/2008/03/09/ancient-chinese-fashion-with-a-modern-twist/Is it good? Is it bad? Is it inspired? Love it or hate it (and I do like some of these even as others make me scratch my head and wonder what planet they came from), you have to admit it illustrates how different people will look at the same thing and get completely different ideas from it. Airtimes can be found here: www.d3mediagroup.com/programs/airing_schedules/iacfschedule.htm

the Miao fashion is such a stand out for the minority tribes. It has had such an effect on the modern fashion climate in China as well as the heavy influence on the Operatic profession.

I saw it and couldn't help but think of the Hmong here in Thailand... and sure enough, it seems they are related. Almost picked up a "Chinese Miao" hat in one antique shop. Anyone have documentation on how far back the Miao clothing goes? Unfortunately, if there isn't recorded evidence, "time immemorial" can be amazingly brief.

I don't know. I wouldn't want to see them in the SCA, mind you, but there are some pretty interesting designs, however loosely they seem to have been inspired by the source material.
