After seeing the wonderful result of making smaller taiko from thick cardboard tubes...
I was listening to taiko in the car on the way home from work and since I made armour from big plastic barrels - I was wondering if it might be possible to make some odaiko from these?
any thoughts?
what perhaps should I do to make it look better? what could I use for the drum heads?
The reasoning behind this idea is that the time and effort (and money) to make a big taiko from an actual wooden barrel is beyond me
thanks

I was wondering if it might be possible to make some odaiko from these? I don't see why not. You might even be able to use a real rawhide on it. www.therhythmhunters.com/classes/drummaking.htm hints that putting some sort of reinforcement around the mouth of the barrel may be needed, but unfortunately doesn't share details. www.taiko.us/cheap.html shows how to put a rawhide head on a PVC sewer-pipe taiko. We used a couple of tire jacks to make the ones for our dojo.

I too, have been toying with this idea. For the reenforcment I was considering using multiple layers of thin maple plywood, similar to what is used to make a modern drum (as in a drum set). I was thinking of using glue and some flatheaded bolts with lock nuts to attach the reenforcement to the barrel. the bolts would be coverd with the rawhide drum head. was also thinking of using upolstery tacks (the fancy ones that youcan see on furniture) to attach the drum heads

I have been told that upholstery tacks tend not to be strong enough.

Thank you for that link.
I'm glad my idea has some merit and others have done it before.
I am thinking of using rawhide as a drumhead but not sure how best to stretch it without some of the tools as presented in those links - such as car jacks!
I am also really curious how one tacks down drum heads on both sides! The link suggests screws but Im not sure if these would hold the skin with the thinner walled plastic barrel I like the barrel for the shape as compared to the pvc pipe
thanks again - now to keep my eyes open for the materials
