That is what I did on my helm, I took a inexpensive Ashcraft Baker helm and with the help of a friend added Shikoro (forgive me). It doesnt look awsome, or pretty, but it looks more Japanese than a domed helm. Ill post a few pics when I get home.

i did the same to mine.
but ashigaru used jingsa not kabutos

Many soldiers used Kabuto. Even those with simpler armor. I think the leather jingasa on top of another helm will look off at best.
Why not have the best looking retainers around? Especially if it might be simpler than putting together all that leather ($$, you know).

I guess the jingsa could also be made with plastic on a legal SCA helm. I would probably last longer.
Otherwise I have to talk to my household leader to find our his desires.
I think we are both wanting Jingsa.
we have access to nearly unlimitited plastic though.
tempting.

OK. update.
I started making some armor.
no pics yet sorry.
the kids went to be vikings.
bah. there goes my entourage.
I will be continuing this project to get more kids involved though.
there are LOTS of Koreans in my neighborhood and I know they would love to be Samurai one day.
SO. I will be working on this more.
For the helms.
our group has a huge supply of kids hockey helms.
so my plan was to make some leather hats (kabuto) to go over them.
now to find a halfway decent pattern.

Hiro There are a few nihonjin up here but the vikings do out number pretty bad. Plus I haven't had the time or resources to make armour yet myself.

I tried to get my wife to go Mongolian...but she went Hun instead...her dang Teacher!
