I made a few weapons for SCA combat that I hope to try out one of these days.

I don't remeber exactly off the top of my head but I'll measure them again when I get home.
The short sword is around 27" while the long sword is a smidge under 48" if I recall correctly. The naginata is also a touch under 7-1/2 feet with a blade of around 22". The tsubas are single layers of heavy duty leather (like 10oz) while on the naginata I glued two layers together. I finished them with a little black leather dye, white paint marker, and satin leather sealer. I used black and white atheletic tape with some black electrical tape for the fake tsumamaki. The naginata haft is painted black.

So i am also making some new sticks. I am debating on how to do the tsumamaki. I cant decide. should i spend some time and make it semi-real. or do i make it out of tape.
thoughts?
so far i have made. wakisashi 2 ft (little less) short sword 3ft tachi 4ft. nodachi 5ft nagamaki 6 ft
making a naginata 7.5 feet. spear is next.

I would imagine it would really depends on how much use/abuse you plan to give your weapons. It takes just a few minutes to wrap the black electrical tap on, but it won't stand up to a lot of abuse before it looks like shredded black electrical tape. I would think that investing in some kind of legitamate tsumamaki would be the best bet, and could probably be reused when the rattan inevitably gives out. There are probably an number of materials that could accomplish the task without being too cost prohibative.

I wonder if a leather tsukamaki would be helpful here. They've been popular of late in the sword community, and can provide a nice grip without the same problems that cloth or tape might have. Granted, it still has to be strong enough, but give it some thought.

Most likely so Ii. I have felt shame since I read my own words about using the electrical tape and have started re-working the grips with some more appropriate lacing material. I'll post some new pics when I get them sorted out.

I do all my handles with black tape covered in red (electrical tape) ito looks good easy and cheap to fix
enough leather to cover my handles would be expensive tho would look great
I hope to do metal tsuba (bar work like Clangs) but not enough time before Rowany Festival - busy sewing hakama, kosode and jinbaori for my 16 year old who is going to his first war!

I used this method on my swords and it looks good. Though I will be switching out for basket hilts for a bit until I can get better gauntlets.
