Does anyone know what type of knife samurai were using as field knives ( prepping foods, preparing camp, etc ) in the Feudal Era ? Did the tanto serve this purpose or was there another utility knife in use ? Thanks.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! Does anyone know what type of knife samurai were using as field knives ( prepping foods, preparing camp, etc ) in the Feudal Era ? Did the tanto serve this purpose or was there another utility knife in use ? Thanks. I would think that there would be a variety of specialty knives in use.

I don't know, but a cursory surf of the collection database of the Kyoto National Museum using the term "knife" turned up the following: www.kyohaku.go.jp/eng/syuzou/index.html"Kozuka" appears to be the operative Japanese word for further searches elsewhere.

Noble Cousin!
Greetings from Solveig! I suppose that some sort of knife is a necessity in uncivilized lands where chefs do not properly cut the food before presenting it.
