My wife and I were in Minneapolis recently to visit her mom and view the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and one of mom's friends said in conversation, "You know the Institute of Arts has an interesting Japanese collection." Actually, we didn't know. In addition to a collection of scrolls and small artifacts, they also have a full size Audience Room and Teahouse built inside the museum. Check out their website www.artsmia.org/art-of-asia/explore/ (click on "Japan", obviously) for more pictures, but here are some pics I took while visiting. Click on the thumbnails for larger images. No tripods allowed, I'm afraid, so some of the pictures are a bit blurry. They do allow flash photography, though. It seems like they only have a small part of their collection on display at any time, So I'll probably go back next time we're in town.

Knew about the exibit, seen ti a couple of times when my wife and I were dating (she attended school at St Olaf, in Northfield MN). I don't remember the Audience room or Tea house, I'm wondering if they are "new" (added sometime in the last 17 years )

The last time we were in CA visiting family, I dragged the wife over to the Winchester Mystery House since she'd never been there. The tour was completely different from the one I remember thirty years previous! Anyway, yes. The architecture parts of the exhibit were added in 2001. The Chinese rooms were added in 1996, also after your time, I'm afraid.
