So, I've recently taken up embroidery as a hobby and I love it. I've also joined a sewing circle and quite a few members are SCAdians who talking about embroidery for garb. A few searches on the website for threads on this topic have posts that concluded that there wasn't really any embroidery in Japan until late period. Even so, I was wondering if anyone has some resources on Japanese embroidery in period. I'd love to make little French knot blossoms on my garb but I take it that's not quite... right... The other solution to this problem is to just make pretty things for my friends, one of whom does late period England.
(As mentioned in other threads, I can't stencil or paint - I'd look like I'm wearing a five year old's art class project... but I can sew).

Ooh, pretty. Bookmark'd! Looks like mostly satin stitch and couching/laid work... and something my peasant garb wouldn't have been decorated with...
Oh well, I can always make decorative pillows.

It's weird - there's mention of embroidered garments in the Heian period (assuming the translators got it right), then it sorta goes away for a few centuries and comes back in the 16th century in imitation of Ming dynasty embroideries.
Don't know if they embroidered pillows or other items. If I find anything, I'll let you know.

Well, the embroideries were probably for the wealthy upper-class ladies. And by pillows, it would be modern applications- I can pick any pattern I want since it would just be for around my apartment. I don't have a particular 'look' around here (it's mostly Ikea Modern/Craigslist Chic/Houseplant Ecclectic).
