Chaotic winds beat Blossoms from flailing branches, A snowless blizzard. Clouds race each other to cross The line of the eastern hills.

Fox paws on the roof Patter even as the sun Peeps through the window. The afternoon is confused By rain and wind off the bay.

Paper and inkbrush Are easily brought to hand But where's the runner? Now the ship is sailing out So posting will have to wait.
What man can live on Salted fish and sour wine In times of hardship? The sound of laughing banquets Is hollow out in the streets.

As a prisoner Who has just wrongly confessed faces punishment, How great then is his relief For even a slight reprieve.
(In Ancient China, a confession was required before a sentence could be pronounced, and therefore the constables would often beat the confession out of a prisoner; they would sometimes beat them more if they denied the charges. As one can guess, this often led to people wrongly confessing. Casebooks often refer to virtuous judges finding new evidence and overturning these bad convictions, but one can only guess how many people never had a successful appeal.)

They start while it's dark Chirping relentlessly near An open window. To greet dawn so cheerfully I'd need a decent night's rest.

Armored men stood ready. The call to battle sounded And they became beasts. I, remaining just a man, was crushed under each stampede.

Water falling from the sky seems unnatural to me after a dry winter. But it is true, what they say Even in Aten, the sun sets.

Perhaps this day is Better spent on kite flying Than flower viewing. Such a rough handed spring has Tattered so many branches.

Graceful branches reach Towards the skylight, posing Like a small dancer. Potted nature makes me pause Each time I mount the stairway.

Ruthlessly I prune Lanky tendrils gone amok, Cutting their lifeline. Yet a jar of water holds New promise with those cuttings.
(My philodendron was getting completely out of hand.....)
