The scarlet sky begs Admiration, reflected In the channel's waves. Spokes tick like a clock as I Pedal across the old bridge.

The floating leaves Torn from the wind-sept mountains Drift down the river; The swaying water grasses Are just so impermanent.

The cactus stands proud and lonely eighty long years before it grows arms. Defended only by thorns The life of a man passes.

Splashing of water Purifying the new year With joy and friendship What new adventures may lie In this next solar cycle?

She thinks I'm so brave. Independence seems to her So enviable. "Strong" and "self-reliant" is Often quite lonely.
(EEP! It has been brought to my attention that the last line is missing syllables. Challenge rule states no rewrites. Oh well.)

In the neighbor's yard a black boar rummages for food thoughtfully left. Poor, simple soul, you know not that soon, you will be bacon.

Sacred mountains call, Demanding spring pilgrimage Offerings of awe. Blessings abound in the touch Of a waterfall's cool kiss.
(Finally fulfilled my wish to see Yosemite in spring.)

This roasting spring No fallen cherry blossoms Outside our window; Cherries wait with the pine trees Back home in the capital.

Each step taken in The mountains holds a blessing For body and soul. It's in the scent of the air And in the depths of sound sleep. In other words, I have been a slug today. I consulted a map earlier and calculate that I rode more than twelve miles by bike (breaking my previous record of 8) and walked between one and two miles in Yosemite yesterday.

Much too early has Clear brigthness given over To clear peacefulness And yet what peace can be had Within that bright inferno?
Seimei = "clear bright"; term for the 3rd month (April) Seiwa = "clear peace"; term for the 4th month (May) Someone really seems to have turned up the heat over here. It went from comfortable to nigh unbearable in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the rains will come sooner rather than later.

Strawberries glisten Like rare jewels as they drain In a reed basket. Restraint be damned: I cannot Resist such a sweet treasure.

Sweet treasure indeed Still piping hot from the stall; Oil, sugar, and dough. The simplest ingredients To get a start on the day.

In this dew drop life How often have I caught scent Of burning salt fires? Now I sit in the pine grove And watch as your ship departs.

The streets are quiet. Lights glow in a few windows, A man coughs next door. As I wait for sleep to come The dog down the street barks once.
