The good news is that it's impossible for me to go cold turkey on on Japanese re-enactment! Things keep bringing me back!
The bad news is, I'm back with every SCA newb's favourite topic, names. I was lucky enough to get "Name Construction In Medieval Japan" as an early Christmas present, and it's absolutely fantastic! It's inspired me to chose and register a Japanese name.
So far, I'm still settled with Torime (p. 386), but I don't have a second name chosen yet.
My question is how women's use of surnames worked - I've read that women used uji or family names, but is there any information about when and how the surname was used? Would it have changed over time periods and/or social class?

Ah, I need to rephrase that a bit, I think. I'm asking about the differences between using uji (clan names) and kamei (family names). I think that article mentioned that earlier in period, uji were used, and later in period, kamei were used?

That's my understanding. I'm registered with a family name (Sou) and a personal name (Haruko). My persona is from the mid-late Kamakura period.
