Well, this is my first post to this forum. I used to be on the Yahoogroups Japan group over 10 years ago, which dates me considerably. Please excuse me if I posted to the wrong section or if I placed this wrong as I am not used to this type of board interface. Yikes. Anyhow, I do period pottery. I started off in the SCA doing Raku mostly. Over the years and because of the Kingdom I'm in, I've mostly moved into other cultures (German, English, Italian, Spanish...etc), though my Shino and oribewares I will make on the side and horde them. Anywho... I'm looking for interesting projects to make. New things. Not teaware or sake sets. Not plates. Something unusual and period. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be functional. Thank you! ;D

I'd been trying to figure out some sort of water pitcher and/or canteen for our encampment and wandering around events. It's dry down here in Caid and staying hydrated is a good thing. Is there something suitably Japanese for such a purpose? I'd be glad to purchase one or two (*after* we move -- sometime in the next few months -- because I don't want to have to move them).

Ohayo dosu, Asakura-hime! Folks, this is the lady who made the pieces referenced in this thread. tousando.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=vendors&action=display&thread=3920&page=1 It's dry down here in Caid and staying hydrated is a good thing. Canteen-wise, a hollowed gourd or section of bamboo were used as canteens. A largish sake bottle could do double duty for water or even cold tea - I have one fitted with a cork that I use for that.

I'm looking for interesting projects to make. New things. Not teaware or sake sets. Not plates. Something unusual and period. Any suggestions? See the blue thing in this picture? It's called a suiteki. You fill it and use it to add water drop by drop to the suzuri (ink stone, the larger black thing) for making ink. That's the only kind I have ever seen for sale, but I've seen much more interesting ones in museums and on the web. Brush rests might also be fun to make.

Water droppers! Yes, I have some references on those in my Classic Stoneware: Shino and Oribe book I just got. I can't figure out if the period ones only had the one hole to fill and pout from however. Other than that, I am happy to make some. I noticed a number of fish designs. I like sculpture, so it's very rare I do it. I took some pictures at the Asian Museum in Pasadena a few weeks back, so I can look at those water droppers (suiteki) and I think there was a bear one, but I could be mistaken. I'll take a look.
Also the ink stone itself, there were two in the book that were nice. Fairly fancy. One with a leaf pattern and another with a wave pattern. I'll look into making those in the next two months. Thanks so much!
