I picked up my cut & thrust katana from amazonia enterprises at Estrella 2012. (Let me say that as far as munition-grade rapiers go, James the Just of amazonia is a great resource.) Unfortunately, I've only heard of a few nihonjin that practice cut & thrust, and seen only one in person! And I didn't even catch his name!
While I appreciate fighting against the various styles of the 'westerners', I really want to cross swords with another katana-toting yojimbo.
So...Who does cut&thrust, and which events will you be hitting this year?
I'll be hitting Arabian Nights @ Moab, UT May 11-14th and Highlands War @ Tucson, AZ May 31st-4th Anything else is still up in the air...

I am in the Middle Kingdom and have just started cut & thrust. I got some blades from James the Just at Gulf Wars and am also extremely happy with them. His Japanese dagger is light as a feather.

Yeah. I'm a fan of the saflex blades that come with both the katana and waki. I regret not picking up the dagger. You also can't beat a lifetime "hilt and handle" guarantee .The only downside to James' japanese weapons are the size of the tsuba. I did see his custom musashi-style tsuba on their 'whats new' page, and it brought out the envy in me... I have the spoked-wheel pattern, myself.

Thanks for the tip. Wish I could go. Nice to know Artemesia is still one of the most C&T friendly kingdoms...now if only I weren't on the damned southwest corner of it.

We're trying to get people interested and excited about it. It's just difficult getting the equipment for it sometimes.

Nana-hime, do you know of any forums or sites that specifically cater to cut & thrust? I'm having a hard time locating anything worth-while.

I've been excited about Cut & Thrust since I started fighting three years ago. But there was a lack of interest until just recently and equipment is expensive. It seems like beginner Cut & Thrust equipment is more expensive than comparable Rapier or Heavy gear. I'll be at St. Pyre's Saturday, though unfortunately I'll be coming and going all day.

would it be possible to build a kit that you can use in all 3? i am going to be using my new do and my old trusty helm with a screen attachemnt with a mantle for rapier . what are the standards for cut and thrust? i would think adding a mempo with solid draping gorget for cut and thrust. what do you think?

Lash-dono, As far as I know you can use normal rapiers in C&T (with an ok from a Marshall and your combatants of course) but I prefer/recommend something a bit more substantial than the average rapier width/thickness. I know James the Just's katanas are fine to use in heavy rapier and C&T. As for the armor requirements in Artemisia please consult the rapier handbook since I don't want to type them out at this link on page 5 www.artemisia.sca.org/marshallate/artRapierRules.pdf but you wouldn't have to use your do for it. Isn't that nice? I'm in the process of making my 16 gauge steel kabuto, but a temporary leather one will work until I get the time and someone willing to teach me to make it. It does say that you have to be authorized in single point rapier before doing C&T- Hope that helps! Masato-dono, Unfortunately I don't see a lot of sites on Cut & Thrust, but if you can pick Don Aaron's brain at an event (I think he's going to Arabian Nights) He does German Long Sword which would be very easy to modify into a more Japanese technique. I would definitely look up German Longsword and see what you can find. I'm coming up empty handed. I would also look at William Wilson's site. I know it's not a Japanese technique but he is an excellent teacher and has a lot of good knowledge. jan.ucc.nau.edu/~wew/tsod.html

My barony is actually in the process of doing exactly this for our Highnesses (they lost all their gear in a house fire). We are making them C&T rated tunics, with built-in leather padding for shoulders and such. Heavy rated helmets with a detachable C&T front or heavy front (on a hinge with a simple pin mechanism to detach them. Easily put on leg armor rated for heavy. And a breastplate for heavy that fits over the tunic. They have crusader personas, but the idea of a single outfit for both (kind of... : is there.

Thank you for the sentiment Lash-dono. Their highnesses received word of the kingdom's works at Gulf War and they seem to be overjoyed at the offer of goods.
I will make sure and find some pictures of the helmet, that is the really different part.

I've been looking at some pictures of kote and I was thinking you could have a lot of reinforced plates/armor for protecting your hands and arms that would obviously be detachable or more of a quick jacket. It would be more of a one piece set of armor that you could throw on really quickly. That might work for their highnesses and other fighters out there. Any thoughts?
