Konnichiwa, tomodachi!
I'm currently struggling with a how-do-I-make-this-play-together question, and I hope that you all may have some suggestions and ideas.
Right now my primary activities in the SCA do not play easily with my persona. I initially developed her as a Kamakura-period onna bugeisha who's managed to make it to the Laurel kingdoms by essentially being sent to spy on the Mongols, and man, there are an awful lot of Mongols.
I'm involved with the local archers, which is cool, though I'm stuck with using a namban bow and arrows for now, until I can penny-pinch enough to save up for a yumi and appropriate arrows. There is someone in my kingdom who's been working with a yumi who has offered to give me a lesson or two, so this is basically the easiest thing for me to make work, long-term, but probably the most expensive.
I'm doing some rapier, and some unarmored combat. I want to address those separately since they're pretty much two different issues. I could theoretically claim that my persona began studying rapier once she arrived in Caid, but it's post-period for her, since she lives in 1286 or thereabouts. I can't do cut-and-thrust rapier until I've been authorized in heavy rapier for a year, so that limits me to the swishy-poky swords for a while. I suppose I could make a Sengoku-period outfit for rapier?
I've also just been introduced (as of this morning) to the experimental Caid spear-as-part-of-rapier combat and am delighted that my samurai-ko may get to play with a spear. That, at least, seems very appropriate!
Unarmored is a totally different kettle of fish since we're using the Rawlings longsword wasters. I'm pretty sure I can turn it into a chokuto/jian with the appropriate tsuba, but the Japanese abandoned the straight sword in the Nara period. (Purpleheart Armory offers curved blades, but the consensus in Caid is that they hit harder and are less safe, therefore a separate authorization and refusable.) I was thinking about making a Nara-period outfit for unarmored combat, and basically hit the point of being frustrated that my persona's period was getting to be all over the map.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is: should I let this bother me? Or should I just focus on doing lots of different Japanese periods depending on my activity, and try not to mash them together? I used to have an Italian persona, but I'm not sure I want to juggle two different personae, that seems like far too much trouble.
