I debated with myself a bit on whether this would go in the clothing section, or the arts. Since I believe that make up is more of an are I'll place this here.
How many of us use make up in our recreation? What kind do you use? What period style of make up do you wear? Pictures, and sources are very welcome to be posted here. I am looking for more ideas on doing my own make up for my Azuchi-Momoyama era upper class warrior woman.

I draw the line at removing my natural eyebrows because I have to go out in the real world. I generally only do full make-up for indoor court functions. I was lucky enough to get a friend in Japan to acquire a jar of oshiroi and a stick of abura wax for me awhile back, but Celebre white foundation by Mehron works quite well and is available from most theatrical make-up suppliers. Get a white or neutral setting powder to pat over the top too. To keep from looking completely dead, I brush a little blush over my eyelids and cheeks - it doesn't really look like there's any color there, but it keeps it from looking completely flat. My eyes are hazel, so I use a dark brown eyeliner and mascara. Try to find a true red for lip color. I also use a paint-on tooth black - you can usually find this around Halloween. It tastes a little metallic going on, but it's non-toxic, dries quickly and is easy to touch up. This photo is several years old: Since then, I've reconsidered how I do my lip color. If you look at period Noh-masks for female characters, their lips are usually completely colored instead of the way I did it in the above. Recent photo in profile (Hating on the wig but it was a special occasion.)

I draw the line at my eyebrows as well. I have gone so far as to dying my hair black as of late since I am at so many events in garb. Dying my hair black isn't too far off from my natural dark brown, so it's not too crazy. That being said, I use to do a lot with the whole 'geisha' scene and experimented a lot with makeup. I have a small guide on doing a nice white face here: ohiokimono.wordpress.com/2010/07/26/the-perfect-white-for-geisha-makeup/ I recently did the white at an event, but failed to get shots I really liked....the photos that are out there are after around 10 hours of wearing the makeup. The white will eventually become uneven and require touching up from a few factors such as being touched, and even your skin pulling in moisture from different areas. I plan on doing a photo shoot in the near future with my makeup on when its at least semi fresh.

I too have found a site that has a variety of white clown make up. I actually had this site on hand before I asked my question here. I should have posted it. Oh well better late then never. I believe that clown make up would be the best for period make up since they often have to deal with things like sweat and heat. www.clownantics.com/clown-makeup/clown-white-makeup-74-1-c.html

The fan is sort of in the way in this photo. I don't always wear makeup, but when I do, it's Celebre. heh. I use the Cream makeup 1B Alabaster base. Mehron Setting Powder with anti-perspirant #136 Ultra White Mehron Tooth-fx Black a little eyeliner and lipstick Mehron makes a nice lipstick "base" that keeps the top color looking even and lasts longer. there is a youtube video for latina urban makeup, i want to say kandee johnson, where she demenstrates how to "remove" the eyebrow with a glue stick and face powder, because she, too, has to go out into the real world.
so far my favorite liner is traditional khole powder from the middle east. my hand shakes, so lining the inner rim tends to give me a cleaner line than tight lining with pencil, gel, or cream and it wears comfortably for ages. it's also made for heat and sun and about as old school as you can safely get. my second favorite is L'Oreal HIP cream liner since it resists water, sweat, and rubbing and comes with a short stiff angle brush that helps me a ton on control. since my hair is normally died black because i like it best for mundane life that way, so is liner and mascara.
if you want durable lip color, revlon overtime liquid is great, but not on top of an oil base. i happen to be rather close to half-dead pale anyway so it's not a problem, but if you got the good geisha paint, maybe you want to skip that. i also tend to draw my lips on in a more anime style, keeping the upper cutely curved but slightly smaller than nature and plumping the bottom slightly, and leave the corners bare or really thin.
if you hit the dollar store on the right day, la colors had a five shade wildflowers eye shadow pallet with a hot pink and a wine red, neither quite geisha alone, but blended give you the distinctive red. they are a bit gritty and slightly frosted, but for a dollar or two, who cares? the other red i have was a lucky find at hot topic before their quality took a swan dive, so good luck finding red eye shadow for under $16 now.
