Please forgive, the humblest praise of all, for I haven't yet made a hitatare, but yours is quite handsome.

Some good friends of ours are currently king and queen, and we got called upon to make some royal garb for them. Her Ladyship Hara is making Her Majesty an uchigi-based outfit, and I'm doing an early period hitatare sugata for His Majesty. Both outfits are being made from the same fabric, at least for the outermost layers, a wonderful silk brocade. Here's His outfit. It still needs some finishing touches (footwear!), but so far, so good.

I always love when people actually add knots, ties, etc. that make it a real hitatare, and the white ties for the hakama, of course!

Thanks! Starting with nice fabric (they are reimbursing us for that) is a real help. I always love when people actually add knots, ties, etc. that make it a real hitatare, and the white ties for the hakama, of course! Sewing for knights is such a pleasure. The kikutoji and munahimo are all made from the same silk yarn, and I'll be making similar cords for tying the wrists. For those playing along at home, I am recreating the "Hitatare and Habaki" (What is the difference between kyahan and habaki?) out fit that starts on page 18 of the Kure red book.

Recently, I had the pleasure of being asked to help make elevation garb for Duchess Morguin of Rye. She wasn't going to be getting her writ until two weeks before her knighting, so everything had to be prepared in secret by other people. Her husband Duke Master Master Sir Christopher Rawlyns organized some of us to make a hitatare sugata as befits her status as a bushi and leader of Clan Yama Kaminari. The hitatare is a daimon hitatare, patterned after this one and this one. The hitatare and hakama no hitatare are both made of red hemp linen from Hemp Basics (unsolicited plug). The screen printing of the badge was done by Lady Fuji'na Takako who is at the right edge of the frame in the photo, I believe with some help from Lady Elaine Fairchilde. The kotsuyu knots, sodetsuyu sleeve ties, and munahimo chest ties are marudai-braided silk, applied with help from Baroness Cecily of Whitehaven and Lady Caillen Athlone. The hitoe layer (hitoe and hakama no hitoe) is white linen. this was supposed to be more of a group project, but the timing didn't work out and I wound up doing most of the sewing for both layers. This outfit worked out well because she was able to wear the white hitoe layer as garb for her vigil, then don the hitatare over that when it was time.
