I saw this news story on television[1] tonight and thought it would be of interest: ajw.asahi.com/article/behind_news/social_affairs/AJ201211290056Researchers have identified one of the oldest examples of hiragana characters ever found, a discovery that could help language historians determine how complex kanji characters became modified as the simplified syllabary used today. [1]A television channel here, World, a branch of PBS, airs a half our English language news program based out of Japan called Newsline. It is affiliated with NHK's international programming. It is followed by Journal, based out of Western Europe.
