So I was talking with an SCA friend of mine today, and ended up relating the tale of receiving my AoA. Afterwards, she looked at me and said, "But you don't wear a circlet?" Me: "It doesn't go with my garb." Which led me to wonder ... is there any accessory or article of clothing that would be appropriate for someone with a mere AoA? I recall the ceramic fish in the box (vaguely and with failure to remember where I saw it) but I also recall that was intended for very high-ranking individuals.

We discussed the fish pendant here almost a year ago. tousando.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=research&thread=3973&page=1It's really only appropriate for those nobles "with palace access", that is Court Barons/Baronesses, Peers, and their betters. I'll note that the "circlet for AoA" thing is actually a local tradition, and not an SCA-at-large thing. Also, even the traditions recognized by the entire SCA are optional and not mandatory. if you don't want to wear a circlet even though you are "entitled" to one, that's your business. In medieval Japan people displayed rank through what garments they wore in public, and what fabrics those garment were made out of. If your barbarian friends don't recognize these cues, be kind to them, they had deprived childhoods.

Yep. It does seem to be a very strong local tradition, given the huge numbers of circlets I saw yesterrday. Admittedly, I'm comparing that to 20 years ago in the Kingdom of the East, where there were very few circlets.
Ah, fine fabric. Would that I could afford more, mundanely! But I did get to explain my garb a bit, a couple of times, which was pretty cool. Also got to meet some ladies wearing fabulous Burgundian. This is the only time of year you can wear it in Caid ....

I have an AoA as well, and choose not to wear a circlet. Instead, I use the awards to justify upgrades to my garb - reflective of my character raising herself up in society.
