over the weekend I attended Black Gryphon, an event held by the Barony of Thors Mountain in Meridies, where I received The Rams Horn (a non armigerous baronial service award) Based on Hiraizumi-sensie's court ranking system www.sengokudaimyo.com/miscellany/address.htmlI am wondering if this moves me from Shô hachi-i to Shô shichi-i, or if it would need a kingdom level award (or armigerous baronial service award, which the kingdom law specifically recognizes). I knew I was receiving an award this weekend when three different friends asked me about proper forms of address as everyone who knows me just calls me Ishikawa.

SCAdially speaking, only Kingdoms really recognize changes of title. This is the first I've heard of a Kingdom-armigerous Baronial award, but that would probably change your title to "Ishikawa Yoshimasa hachi-i", since the AoA is Kingdom but the order is Baronial. For the moment, I'd still place you as "Ishikawa Yoshimasa daiso-i", but I'm no expert. In any case, it sounds like you are well on your way, so don't inscribe your current title in stone anywhere.

no... I already had an AoA, I got the non-armigerous baronial award this weekend, but yes meridies recognizes baronial service awards such as in our case the sable gryphon which may confer an AoA (with crown permission) if it is not already possessed (a rare event)...
most of the baronies have added non-armigerous awards as well.
in meridies atleast we consider landed baron(ess)s to be representative of the crown but at the same time it is not a kingdom award, so I was trying to decide if it was in the spirit of AoA + other orders...
I am not an award chaser, so I am not worried either way, but discussion with friends of proper name and title sparked my curiosity.

It should be noted that Effingham-sensei's alternative title/rank listing is not recognized officially by the College of Heralds or anyone else. If he would descend from his mountaintop and submit it himself with the appropriate documentation as to his sources, they might consider doing so. (I know, I inquired about it.) Until then, we are stuck with this sad, anachronistic piece of, well. heraldry.sca.org/titles.html#table9Which doesn't mean we should not try to use more appropriate titles and honorifics.

Ah. My apologies for misunderstanding, Ishikawa-dono. I guess the best course of action would be to ask your Kingdom's Order of Precedence (OP) Herald how your Kingdom counts your Baronial orders. There's nothing wrong with wanting to properly acknowledge recognition by the Crown and Coronet. That's how I feel about it, anyway.

Tricky ... I would, however, argue no, there is no advancement.
The Ram's Horn looks to be a non-armigerous Baronial award for Service/A&S/Fighting; it is not listed as a recognised Order on the Meridies Kingdom Orders & Awards webpage (as of 2009, anyway). The award confers recognition but not rank.
Congratulations, though.
