I was doing some research on Ishiyamadera Temple, and I saw this image of Ema offerings.  The majority of them have the same character written on the front. It's very similar to the "石" character for "ishi" (stone), but not exactly. I'm wondering if it's a character that specifically represents "Ishiyamadera" or if there is some translation. |

Greetings from Solveig! It may be 厄 (wazawai) which is " misfortune; bad luck; evil; disaster; ". Regardless, it doesn't look like 石 (ishi) to me.

Okay, initially I thought that it might be the zodiac sign for the year, but after blowing up the image, I concur with Solveig-dono: This looks like "wazawa(i)".

This photo is dated May 23, 2009, so they could be prayers related to the misfortunes of the 2009 typhoon season, which had already started being bad by then. Thanks for the help!

That's kind of a lot of presumption based on one photo.
Regardless, it probably doesn't have much to do with the name of the temple. You can easily see the name of the temple on the side of the prayer thingies.

That's kind of a lot of presumption based on one photo. Here's another one: The ones that have pictures of a woman on them are dedications to Murasaki Shikibu, who allegedly started writing Genji Mongatari at Ishiyama-dera. |

大和 is the traditional way to write "Yamato". It is "Great Wa", which is the kanji that the Japanese tend to use. 倭 is the other kanji used (by itself) and pronounced "Yamato", but it is not used as often.
In truth, both can be used in this context, but 大和絵 are the kanji that come up first, and are likely more widely known.
