In honor of the fallen...a lunar cycle of period poetry. I will try and post 1 period poem a day, and with it include little tid bits of history.
Day 1 "The light of the moon lodges night after night in the sleeve of one who grieves to spread her robe on a bed where she sleeps alone." - From the Confessions of Lady Nijo, roughly 1273ad

Day 2 "Like layered mourning robes, our sorrow accumulate, grief added to grief, on this tear-bedewed journey our imperial lady makes." - From 'A Tale of Flowering Fortunes' by Akazome Emon, on the passing of Fukiware no Michinaga in 1027ad, the mourning woman is his wife. Akazome Emon was a minor poet, the stepdaughter of an obscure officer. Later in her life she rose to become a lady-in-waiting. More at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akazome_Emon
