So I went looking for any information I could find about the mysterious lunar kami, Tsukuyomi no Mikoto, a Shinto deity important enough to get three different name spellings and temples throughout japan, mention in so many anime that it makes research a real pain, yet seems to have little information on his role in religion.
What I found instead was a complex form of divination that starts in India and evolves as it travels to Japan. Much like any other Buddhist concept, many a web writer claims that it was adapted from the Chinese format to suit the people, and one writer even mentions a temporary ban on the practice. It also looks like the courts, if not the commoners, placed a very high level of importance on what a fortune teller had to say about lucky and unlucky days for any given activity given records being made governing what onmyoji were expected or forbidden to practice.
Though when I try to find out how these maters are determined, most historians on the net don't even want to go there. I mean, really, who would need such superstitious nonsense in daily life? Well, as historical re-creationist working with a time that superstition held a great deal of weight for important decisions, how can we not be a bit curious as to why historic events took place when they did? Since the Chinese lunar calender was both used for predictions and for keeping records, it also seems like knowing how it works would help provide more accurate dates when looking at historic records that survived the ages.
So, although it would be a tedious pain to make, dose anyone want to try to find out how the period calender works? What year and month dose that put important sca events in traditional record keeping? And if we really want to go the extra step, what birth sign is your persona?
