The BOTN usa team has left botn to form their own league with the rest of the world called the International Medievil Combat Federation. check out their web page for info . the exciting thing is what was posted on their facebook page below. Zorikh Lequidre
I am posting this strictly for the purpose of establishing a thread for people to debate this topic so they don't have to hijack other threads to do so: I have a history book called "The Medieval World: Civilization from 1000-15000" by David Nicole. It includes cultures in the Middle East, Asia, Far East, the Americas, Africa, and yes, even Europe. I have another one called "Larousse Encyclopedia of Ancient and Medieval History" which includes chapters on "The Asiatic World," "The Tang Emperor's Save China," "The Awakening of Japan," "America and Asia," "Mongol Decline and Islam's Revenge" and "Pre-Columbian America." Maps cover the entire Eurasian continent. Therefore, I say the Medieval World was the entire world. I can certainly get behind the concept of narrowing it down to, say three centuries or so for the sake of some cultural cohesiveness, but to narrow it down to just a dozen or so countries in the smallest, most ethnically homogeneous sub-continent on the planet (Europe) is wrong. Bring on the samurai!
The gauntlet has been thrown, here is the field. Have at me.
the new rules set has not been published yet but I want in . so I need help here to start looking for a kit that can take the punishment of that sport. I want it to be traditional as much as possible but using modern materials for safety . I would like everyones POSITIVE input on this and help to find a period kit that is 100% documentable with times dates and even ancient paintings to use as a model . as soon as they release the armor manual it will tell if I can use modern equipment under the kit or if everything must be period. and it will also give time frames that will ultimately decide what I can use . I saw this armor but didn't think it was historical and it didn't say what time period but it has very good coverage.
so keep your fingers crossed !!! cant wait!!!!

Spring Steel everywhere.
Honestly your biggest issues will probably be Hand Protection and Face Protection if the armor needs to be made to exacting period standards. The problem with the hands is except for a couple of examples of clam like gauntlets Japanese hand protection doesn't ground out and typically leaves part of the hand open to being hit and the Mempo doesn't really have anything to ground out on so impact is absorbed straight on the face.
Having said that we have a couple of members here who do BOTN style combat in Russia who get along just fine, so I'm sure it is doable. Hopefully they will chime in here and give you some guidance.

my concerns are the same as yours also weak points are the back of the leg up to the glutes, wrists, feet , back of the skull where the base of the neck is open on most kabutos. they may allow a full helm for protection but as you say we have to wait . im thinking the same design we were talking about may work with , as you say , all spring steel.

The back of the head should be covered. Remember the bowl of the helm tips back and if you wear a Guruwa you shouldn't really have a gap, especially with the Shikoro there. Do a Mandarin with Kikko and that should cover any exposed upper back, front and arm pits. Make your Haidate wrap nice and tight and your legs should be good. I've actually given a lot of this thought because I was thinking about trying out for the BotN team once we started seeing Japanese armor showing up. Then decided I've abused my body enough. For Hands I think you could get away with Full Tekko, just over size them enough to cover the whole hand and pad the living crap out of them. Use super tight weave chain between the plates and you should have good force distribution. The hard part to me is the Mempo. I know a lot of these live steel groups use open face helmets with large brims and gorgets to protect the face so getting a Mempo passed shouldn't be a problem, but I know I would want more protection. I've got a few ideas for hidden re-enforcement to keep the Mempo off the face while having it "Roll" to ground out on the helm. There is still a chance of solid contact from the Mempo to face but it would cut it a lot and distribute the force a good amount even if it happened. After they come out with their armor requirements I'll see if it would work under them.

I don't know what the IMCF's requirements for period authenticity will be, but I know that BOTN recognized that most period hand protection was woefully insufficient and basically said, "Screw authenticity, we're requiring full hand protection for safety."

YES!!!!! from the horses mouth so to speak exterior armor and first layer of padding must be visually authentic but under that can be any modern protection that will be labeled personal protection!!!!!! wooohoooooo!!!! that much closer!

Very awesome. I have been contemplating making a 14th centurey kit to fight in ACL. But this would definately fit into my preferences much better.

You gotta admit it's pretty funny that several of the BOTN guys were a bunch of cats who didn't get along with folks in the SCA. Now they don't get along with BOTN guys and started their own thing.

except for this time they have cause . the head honchos of botn were allowing cheating and cultural discrimination that they couldn't abide. but you are right about a lot of them not getting along in the sca.

I think it would be better to stick with designs that are easily recognized as Japanese then pull out on obscure design. I honestly think we can get the standard designed Japanese helmet safe for this kind of combat.

I agree. I would think going with a full mempo or something similar. Given the results I've seen on those in SCA combat, I'm not sure why you couldn't adapt it for this.
