Hello, Thank you for having such a place for likeminded people, I am thrilled to have found a 'home'. Now onto why I am making this post. some friends and myself, we partake in a game called 'Dagorhir' as well as dabble in the SCA, and a few of us have toyed with thoughts of the BoTN, this is just to give you an idea of where we come from. Now my question, as one of the lead... 'leathersmiths'...No not here,as one of the tailors for my clan and realm, how can I go from making stuff like this mess To something in metal, and look fantastic. I have pour myself over the Sengoku website innumerable hours after loosing my job, and now feel I have a new goal in between jobs, to make armour for my clan. Now I also have somewhat of a deadline, June 21, Our Pennsic, Ragnarok. I would like to have at least two complete do with kabuto. But my problem is I do not know where to start, we are thinking the Tsuzumi Do paired with simple but dramatic Kabuto and Somen (Dagorhir's cut off date is roughly before the Edo Period so I think if I have my times correct the Somen would have been more 'popular'). I apologize if this is the wrong place for such a post. Hopefully you can grace us with your wisdom of the craft. Thank you all.

This, honestly, is a rough one, especially because I don't know how many people you want to make these for. If you don't really have experience with metal working I'm not sure how you will get helmets done by the date you have as your goal, so I would first go for the Do as you may reasonably get those done in time.
Start with poster board patterns, cut those out and fit them together to see if they will fit you or another person that you want to make the armor for.
When you have those done then start cutting your metal.
After that Sengoku Daimyo has all the info you need to get you from start to finish.

Thank you very much for the information... If anything I can make some other types of head armour.

You could always just do the European Helm dress up for now and replace them later when you have the time.

Well for our game, Armour is not a requirement, but more of a 'bonus' and an accent for garb. So helms aren't entirely needed. so I was thinking of a Hanbo? The monkey cheeks

The armor you wish to make requires great skill and deep pockets. I have spent at least $600 on armor to date, and I'm not finishedwith one full suit of armor yet. If you are interested in making good armor, all you have to do is study books and pictures, along with the Sengoku Daimyo webpage. Advise for a beginner; make mistakes. Buy some metal, cut it, try to form it into something you want, and suck at doing it. No, I'm not kidding. This is how you learn to deal with metal (and making helmets the Japanese way). And don't be afraid to spend money. Alot of it. This stuff isn't cheap, and it shouldn't be treated as such. If you keep that in mind, and hit the books to study (HARD) you'll make great armor. It may take a couple of years, just like when I wanted to start making armor, but it is worth it! And by the way, the cheek protectors are called Happuri; seemingly simple to make, and yet not.
