Hi, everybody! Friendly neighborhood Nipponbunka newbie here with a silly question. I'm not even sure if this is the right board for it, so if it's not, please feel free to whisk it wherever it goes, but, uh... what the heck is this thing called: I see these in lots of jidaigeki, used as armrests, and am pretty keen on building one, but...does it have a name? Is it just an armrest? Does it serve some other purpose? I mean, I can make it like it looks no problem, but I'd kind of like to know what it is I'm building first. thanks.

Thanks for the swift response! You guys are the best. I'm potentially moving soon (as in, it's all decided but if I admit it out loud, the universe will try to make it a nightmare), and I finally get a space to live in that doesn't require me to store someone else's furniture, so I'm going with something minimalistic and functional and gorgeous. So obviously this is where I'm getting my inspiration.
