How would one make a Koshi-zuto or Kate-bukuro?
Preferably out of fabric rather then twisted paper

Now how is this tied to oneself?

They seem to generally be worn either loosely over the shoulders, our else diagonally across the back,, from what I've seen in illustrations. You might also get away with just throwing it over one shoulder.

Musashi wears one at the end of the first part of the Samurai Trilogy. I didn't remember that, but taking a look, you are right, he does. Note the cord across his upper chest in this image: Note the black bag across the back of his blue jinbaori in this image: Note also how the kyahan part of his hakama are the same fabric.

After many years, this question came back up over on the SCA Japanese Facebook group. At Twelfth Night I was gifted with some lovely Japanese indigo cotton from the most overpriced fabric store in San Francisco, so I figured I would take a whack at constructing a kate-bukuro. First photo shows the attachment of an internal pocket - probably anachronistic, but I wanted one. Second photo shows the fabric folded accordion-style into fourths. I then slit holes at about 3/4" from each corner of the fold. I did not finish the holes as the drawstring gets tied off and I figured they were unlikely to fray because of that. Third photo shows round cotton cord threaded through the holes. (I put tape around the end of the cord to make it easier to poke through those holes.) See next post for the rest. (Click on photos to enlarge.)

First photo shows cord drawn and tied off into a loop. Second photo shows the knot pulled to the side for the finished loop. Final photo shows bag with long cord attached and tied off with knots. (You can see the internal pocket.) At this point I am finished except for addition of a knot or toggle closure. I think I have an ojime bead somewhere that I may use for this.

Unfortunately, I have some regular trouble translating pictures into three-dimensional objects in my head, and I'm having equal trouble parsing the Musashi screenshots. To my eye, this looks something like a large kake-mamori meant to be slung over the side or back instead of hung around the neck, with the toggle in the center to keep it shut. Is that about right, or am I processing this incorrectly?

There's a fabric store in NYC's fabric district I think of just the same way. When you've been all over, just can't find what you're looking for, are sick of looking, and now price is no longer an object, why not visit B&J Fabrics?
