Greetings,
In my research on textiles I see a lot of mention of spinning but I can't actually find any info on spinning in Japan. I keep coming up with Edo and after spinning info.
What key words should I be using? What is the Japanese words for spinning thread? What is a good book on Japanese skinning history?

I assume you mean "spinning" history. You are just looking for how they created the thread? I'll have to look into it. I would first look into things like "織", but I suspect that will have more to do with weaving.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! Google translate and JDiC believe that tsumugu 紡ぐ is the verb that we are looking for. Bouseki 紡績 is supposed to be the word for "spinning". Looking for history stuff, I find mostly stuff dating to the Edo Period which is after our period of interest. I do find the following book which is in Japanese: 『苧麻・絹・木綿の社会史』永原慶二著 吉川弘文館 2004年 資料番号:21775598 請求記号:383.1PP/273 ISBN: 4642079343 which claims to have some history dating to the fifteenth century in it. However, it does not appear to be a material culture book which will show you how to spin. There may be some interesting stuff at the Silk Museum: www.silkmuseum.or.jp/english_main/museumguide/ they claim to have an extensive library which is in Japanese only.
