In 1224, Fujiwara Kintsune, Chancellor of the Kamakura Shogunate, founded the Saionji (Western Garden Temple) in the Kitayama area of what is now Kyoto. His descendants took the family name Saionji. Ashikaga Tasteless Yoshimitsu decided he wanted the land for his garish Golden Pavilion, Kinkakuji, and the Saionji was moved to Muromachi, south of the city, and finally, in the late 16th century, to its current location north of the current Imperial Palace grounds off Kuramaguchi-dori in a quiet residential neighborhood near Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts. And we found it today. www.facebook.com/lisa.joseph.7792/media_set?set=a.10152867494578487.1073741832.683913486&type=3 is public on Facebook. I will post the link to my Flickr album after it downloads. I have to say this was a thrill. "My" name is on all the gate posts. The Saionji tomoe appears on doors, the incense urn, the stonework. Even though the hall was closed and signs of construction work were everywhere, I made an offering.
