Greetings, O Wise Ones!
Has anyone come across resources for the garb of Imperial Princes and Princesses in infancy? There are tantalizing references to the clothing of the little Prince in Murasaki's diary, but of course no construction details. I am wondering whether anyone even knows where to start with this, whether there were significant differences in the clothing for each gender, etc. It seems reasonable that the construction of the robes would be similar to that of adult garments, as it is such a practical design, but any information confirming or refuting this would be welcome. I'm also VERY curious about period Japanese diapering arrangements for such affluent infants, but I may just need to sigh and admit that's lost to the ages...
My humble thanks for your time.

(There are more children in the display at the Costume Museum, so you may want to look through that set) It depends on the age of the child. Basically, though, you probably want a series of (relatively) long hitoe. It was something that the child could grow into, and you didn't worry about hakama until later. There does seem to be a very basic undergarment that you will sometimes see, as well, like a bib that goes around their neck and down, through the legs, and then ties around the waist. You will sometimes see a fancy red version on Kintaro (note: not the Mortal Kombat character, though that would be hilarious!) For reference you may want to look up Onmyoji. While not documentation, you wouldn't go too far wrong with that approach (minus, of course, all of the kanji painted on poor Atsuhira). -Ii

Magnificent! Thank you: I can make a very good start with this. Thank you, too, for the film recommendation. Baby details aside, WOW! Heian eyecandy!
