Just musing on persona possibilities and I was wondering about the history of conscription in times of war. If they follow the European model as I understand it, the samurai would be the officer class, who would be the masses? He farmers and tradesmen armed with spears and such, who would they be and how would they be dressed and equipped. I would love for anyone to point me to more info on this

The term "ashigaru" is what you're looking for. These conscripted foot soldiers would be lightly armed with spears - or muskets by the late 16th century. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashigaru is not a bad place to start as it lists some other sources if you want to go hunting down some books on it.

Thanks so much, that is exactly what I was looking for. Altho, I seem to think I have heard that word before, or was is ashigawa, in the ghost in the shell.
