Even though I still have some editing left to do, I'm officially making the Ryori Monogatari translation I've been working on live, and it can be found here: food.sengokudaimyo.com. For those who don't know, Ryori Monogatari is one of, if not the, oldest extant Japanese cookbook, with 20 chapters: the first 7 are lists of ingredients with different preparation methods, chapter 8-19 are different types of preparations, and chapter 20 has various other teachings and suggestions that apparently didn't go anywhere else. Although the text I was working from was from the mid-17th century, there are some thoughts that earlier editions may have been released as early as 1600 or 1610. Though technically post-period, many of the recipes given are noted in diaries and lists of banquet items in earlier times, and, in general, it is generally referenced in regards to late Sengoku Period food. The Appendices are currently empty, but those will eventually have helpful information regarding the measurements, techniques, and other food items. I'm still considering how best to do footnotes and the like, and I'm trying to keep it simple. There is also, as I said, some editing of the translation left to do. So this is a rough open, but I wanted to get it out there before the class I'm teaching at Atlantian University next weekend. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Eventually, I also hope to add more to the site about cooking and feasts, including information on the Heian style banquets and a brief history of feasting in Japan.

This looks fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
Just to clarify a few items: Do you want us to respond with constructive criticism through this thread? -OR- Would your prefer feedback through a personal message? Are there any particular areas on the site you want specific feedback?
I love to cook so this will be a great adventure! Thanks again for sharing.

Go ahead and PM me anything that you see--whether editing, something that is confusing, etc. If you have better layout suggestions, let me know that as well. I played around with a few things and did what I could, but I'm really not a web developer and don't have time to code stuff, but I don't like the look from most of the free "packages" that I've found. Also, if there are things that are confusing or oddly worded. Granted--any chapter that doesn't have an explanatory "header" to it I probably need to go back over and add something.
I'm also trying to figure out the best way to do footnotes on the web. Probably some kind of pop-up window, as much as I generally hate those, but other suggestions would be welcome. I could do them in a column on the right-hand side of the screen, but I'm not sure, yet.

FYI: I'm taking any and all suggestions and creating a work-off list to get to as I can, so thank you to everyone who has sent in suggestions. Also, I've put together a FB page if anyone wants to keep up to date with the project: www.facebook.com/pages/Ryori-Monogatari/1125994904094293I'll post updates about the page, as well as general notes about other Japanese food-history related topics that I happen to run across. -Ii
