I've been looking at this knot, and while I initially thought it was an abbreviated agemaki, it does look slightly different, since the two central cords in the middle are together like that, instead of the "weave" you normally get of over-under. That said, I don't see it on other kote that I take a look at. Some don't have any knot at all, others have a fairly simple knot. Where is the picture originally from? Either way, I wouldn't worry about it as something necessary. If you just like it, you might want to check out a book of knots and see if there is anything that you can find.

Either way, I wouldn't worry about it as something necessary. I realize that you do not say this knot is decorative only, but you come awfully close to implying that this knot serves no purpose. I think it does. It looks like it's a tensioning knot of some kind, tied in the middle of the loops (on the bight, as sailors say) that would enable you to tighten the cords by pulling on the ends of the loops. The form looks a lot like a doubled version of the "alpine butterfly knot", but I don't know how you tie that.

The problem I'm having is that I don't see it on other kote I've been looking at, and I don't know where this kote is from. I have no idea if this is an actual period knot. If it is a tensioning knot, is it a period practice? Also, since you tie the kote at that point, why add a tensioning knot?
It is an interesting theory, but I'd want to see more than one example, first. Second, I'd like to see some evidence it is period. I would think we should find it somewhere.
