A cavalry charge Of grey maned storm clouds race east, Darkening the sky. In moments, a fusillade Of rain batters the windows.

a pad of butter slowly rises from the east almost gently so and from the west they came in a cruel blue horizon

Much as I dislike waking to a cold, gray day, "up before the sun" makes me feel like such a hard worker for the autumn months.

Anticipation Another day, nothing done Waiting, just waiting Words are wind, and wind is air, And air is nothing at all.

Fine lines on paper Take on a life of their own And I laugh aloud. Two men wage a war of stares On a scroll centuries old.

A cold evening wind rushing through the tree tops, singing through the wires, bearing the scent of wood smoke and sweet perfume of Autumn.

Brush touches wet ink. Ink rises between bristles. Bristles touch paper. Paper drinks ink from the brush. The arm moves, and thought takes form.

November 1 From the top of Mt. Houman, in Dazaifu
Here at the summit, The world seems so very clear Far down below us But can we live in the world While we remain above it?
November 2: Eating out in Nara
Masu of sake With tempura and noodles In Nara city Who could ever imagine That bean sprouts could be so good?
November 3: Autumn in Nara
The cries of the deer Echo through the morning mist And off mossy pines. Ancient culture sounds Here in the old capital.
November 4: Traveling past Fuji on the Tokaido
The clickety-clack Of cameras and cellphones Heralds its presence: Like a spear up to heaven Fuji leans over us all.
November 5: At an izakaya
Friends, fish, and sake Harmonious together In the evening A fortuitous finding Has led us all to laughter.
November 6: At an onsen
Healthy spring water Rises up from underground Lone star shines above In between, the entire world Is nothing more than a speck.
November 7: On a visit to Sengakuji
Forty-seven stones Surrounded in the sweet smell Of rising incense. What stories remain for us Once we, ourselves, have passed on?
November 8: Winning the Nakamura Cup
Congratulations Fall upon shocked expressions Unable to hear Unimaginable things Have taken place on this day.
November 9: In the mountains of Nagano.
The summer colors Are changed for autumnal robes Of red and yellow; The lady of Nagano Remains ever in fashion.
November 10: Viewing mountains in autumn
Clouds brush the mountains, Clad in autumn finery, With lazy fingers; Across the silent landscape The world is awakening.
November 11: Preparing to leave Japan
Through fond memories I look on Mt. Mikasa Now so far distant; Embarking for foreign shores I know I'll return some day.

The Marine barracks Plays their sunset bugle call As the flag comes down. I pause to listen most nights As darkness falls earlier.

So much for getting to my work early today, as an accident involving six vehicles doubles my longish commute.

Lists have been checked off. Clothing has been pressed and packed, As have been my books. In the morning it begins, A journey to a new place.

November 12 DST
The darkness descends Like a cold heavy blanket Enveloping all So early it seems to come Now that summer days are gone.

The autumn wind whisks through the backyard chasing leaves and tiny brown birds who folic through the shrubbery— merry circus performers.

The heart of a dog has much to say about the world, and people can see through its eyes even when the dog can do no more.

11.10.15
These words slowly drip Like candle wax on cake, yet - There was no party And the light was extinguished Before I could make a wish.
11.11.15
Sweet maple syrup Over flapjacks stacked five high Laced in white sugar Accented with strawberries Or blueberries in a pinch.
11.12.15
A broken lute string Among an empty old pub Our harmony lost Your sympathy heals me not Center stage a mournful tree
11.13.15 - to be continued...
