Well, I won't need as much as I'm going for sugake odoshi, but back when I did my planning, I thought that affordability was the most important thing. Therefor I just looked for shoelace roughly the shade of green that I wanted. I hadn't even considered silk odoshi-ge, but seeing how Dave's going to offer it for reasonable prices, I've started to thing again...
Yeah, I kind of understand Trevor's point of view. But then, on the other hand, that's one thing that I like about the community of the Samurai Armour Forum: people often ask for advice about pieces of armour that they bought or want to buy (or like me, about armour they are making or planning to make), and they get this advice for free. The reason is that the community is dedicated to sharing their knowledge, rather than offering their expertise for a price. It's not something to take for granted though, that's why I understand how Trevor as an individual got tired of it.

Yeah, the kikko takes the same general cord as the kozane, though that can all vary a bit. The same ratio as for sugake odoshi would apply; close enough so that the "X" looks more like a square than an "X". -Ii Mykaru corrected me: The lacing for kikkô should be considerably smaller than the lacing for the rest of the armor. It still shouldn't be showing a definitive "X" on the outside, so that will affect the size and spacing of your holes as well. -Ii

On the best photo of kikkô tateage that I have, it looks like the width of the lacing is about 1/4 the width of the plates, so somewhere around 5 mm/a bit under 1/4". How does that sound?

I had a look at Kōzan, and he has disappointingly little to say about kikkô except that it is appropriate to cover kikkô tateage with wool.

I am thinking of making a patch or two of kikkô to see how it moves compared to other styles of scale/lamellar/brigandine. Is it traditional to use the same wide flat braid for the kikkô as for the kozane (3/8" to 1/2" or even wider)? And are there any rules of thumb to relate the hole size to the width of the braid? It would probably be easier to just order some braid and start playing around but I would hate to waste a roll and the shipping costs. Also, any thoughts on the laquered vs. unlaquered finish on Rice Braid products, or nylon vs. polyester? Of the people whom Effingham recommended they seem to be the last man standing. Leather might be even easier but just feels wrong for kikkô.

Thanks! In return, I have some photos of riveted namban kusari on one of the Japanese armours which reached Europe in the 16th or 17th century which I should have time to blog about some time this year.
