From the Rekihaku Museum in Sakura, Japan. This is a 1588 diplomatic document from the Portuguese Viceroy of the Indies to Hideyoshi. I love the way they incorporated his mon as his device. If you want an example of a western scroll for a Japanese persona, here you go. -Ii

Ii dono!
Greetings from Solveig! There are a bunch of reasons that I love these sixteenth century Portuguese documents. Thank you for posting a color image of this one. I am a bit sad that we can not see it in its full glory straight on. Regardless, I think it is now a couple of decades ago, some prominent people were loudly arguing that official documents never had illuminated bordures. However, I happened to own a Japanese high school history book which had a picture of one of these Portuguese documents in it. About the same time, I was able to visit the Kriminal Museum in Germany, and it turns out that illuminated bordures were at one point so much expected that they were even preprinting the things.
