It's almost November and you know what THAT means! Here's the concept: Write one tanka (waka)* a day for the month of November. *Resources on tanka: www.ahapoetry.com/TANKA.HTMwww.americantanka.com/www.wodefordhall.com/heianpoetryjam.htmThe spirit of this poetic form being the impermanence of this dewdrop life, no other make-ups are permitted. If you miss a day, you miss a day and as in real life, you never get it back. (You're on the honor system here....) No limits on subject matter other than any you chose to impose upon yourself. Hopefully, some moment in your day will inspire you to write about it. If you write more than one tanka a day, fine. However, you may not carry over tanka to other days. You have to write a poem on each day. (If you are inspired to "answer" someone else's poem, great. Personally, if I do so, I am not going to count it toward my daily assignment. The idea is to come up with something myself each day. What you do is up to you.) Adherence to the 5-7-5-7-7 line/syllable count is required, otherwise it's not a tanka. It's poetry, not stereo instructions. It should say something and it should make sense. No rewrites. (I know, I'm evil, but it's part of the process of practicing this form. At least for me.) If you want to share your poems, you may post them to this thread. This challenge originally premiered in 2008. Good luck everyone!

Almost one full day was spent merely traveling. All that time waiting between here and there as a metal tube hurtled Westward.

Day 1:
山村が 現れて来る 真っ黒から; お湯に対して 風が涼しき
Inspired by watching the sun rise in the mountains while sitting in an outdoor bath at Yunazuki Onsen.

The hour grows so late, And words come far too slowly. My thoughts fly like birds Fleeing to warmer climates As winter marches closer.

Sunlit morning skies Can make one forget November Until the wind blows. Must the sun be deceitful As she draws away from us?

First meal in Japan, at a loud izakaya. It's almost as if these people are my friends, and not here to display me.

The first lines are rough, Hesitant with the disuse Of art not practiced. Trust the brush and ink to Know their job if I do not.

Amaterasu Is hiding within her cave. Susanoo makes sport Darkening the skies with clouds, Threatening to drown the earth.

Orion stands watch As I proffer my key card At the office door. Armed only with my wits and A mug of tea, I start work.

It's very strange to watch myself from weeks ago in moving pictures that are shown in the evening while I watch in the morning.

Day 3:
The slim, bow-drawn moon Behind diaphanous clouds Hanging in the sky Along the well-worn pathways Leaves lay scattered all about.
