Argh! after spending all day yesterday tracking down materials for a kyudo makiwara, I spent all day today building the frame. First shot beautiful! all the way through, hits the wall and bounces back almost nailing me during zanshin.
The makiwara is tight enough. I guess I'll have to hunt down a different filler material. Back to the hunt.

[Snicker]
Wonder if you might want to put up a backstop to slow down those pass-throughs and misses? Old carpet would do.
What kind of fill did you use?

Yea - the fill has to be quite firm...I have sucessfully used those little bamboo rolls people like to sit on, ann tied up tightly and rolled into a big bale... Date

Go ahead and run if you'd rather die tired.

"Wonder if you might want to put up a backstop to slow down those pass-throughs and misses? Old carpet would do. " Well the makiwara is a bout 1 inch from the wall. It went in, struck, and came ass first right back out. Fill is some kind of split reed. You know the kind that chair seats are sometimes woven of. Thailand's number 1 export is rice and I can't find rice straw for the life of me. My sensei wrote an advanced kyudo book and I have the honor of translating it into English. (it's also being translated into German, Finnish, Italian, and Spanish). As for one shot, one life, One of the models in the book is Murata-san. In two years I saw her miss 9 times. That's roughly .01%. She's scary.

Woof! No wonder you had a rebound. There just plain wasn't anyplace for its energy to dissipate. Sounds like you'll need to experiment with filler. Or move your target a little farther from the wall. (If your layout dictates that you can).

Yes, but that is when it's done MAYBE Izawa-san and Gakken will be interested in publishing. This is by sensei's request so it will be published.
