i have a question, if i may...has anyone here ever used an sca adapted signalling/war fan in the role of a buckler-type shield? i am interested in doing so, as i feel it may improve the overall look of my persona on the field...daito in one hand, gunsen in the other... thoughts? thanx in advance for your consideration.

I have used a fan as a parying device in the past. It can be effective if you know what you are doing, but it takes a lot of practice.I am just now moving from the Youngstown Ohio area (yea...I know...Youngstown... - I just happened to live there - I didn't invent it) and settling in to the Lockport New York area... I have always been an Aethelmeark sort of person, even though I lived in Ohio for a while... I hope you can make it to say, War Practice at the Cooper's (same place as Pennsic)...I look forward to meeting you. Date

i too, would welcome the chance to meet you. the trick for me at this stage is finding a place to train once again, and getting back in the swing of things. when i fought 3 years ago, it was mostly sporadic, and (as it often does), life interfered. but i am ready now, and come springtime my armour ought to be done. *crosses fingers*

My friend and I sometimes use a small shield cut to resemble an open folding war fan. mine is cut from 3/4 " plywood and edged with hose. In one "side" a hole is cut long and deep enough to get my hand in to get a good grip. kinda freaks out the Gaijin with there rain shudders straped the there arm , " thats your shield!!!"
I use it to block and to stick in there face, between their shield and my "fan" they cant see much. I dont hit them with it just hold it in front of them.

otagiri: that is an excellent rendition...thats very nearly the kind of thing i was envisioning... torashi, your variation on the theme is also cool, and also how i plan on using my fan as well. distract, obscure, parry, and strike with the other weapon. being left-handed, i was considering using the fan in either hand, experimenting with both. it means my mobility had best be effective.

Ohayo!
I'll share...
I carry a gumbai uchiwa and a "tessen" as part of my kit (not simultaneously, in case you were wondering).
The gunbai uchiwa is constructed of closed cell foam, etc. in the same fashion as many SCA legal axes. It is my least favorite of the two for no more reason than I'm not particularly in to two-weapon styles, and it is a bit much to carry around for the defense it offers.
I prefer to use the "tessen", a 3/4 inch plywood "buckler" that is cut in the shape of an open fan. The handle/hand opening is along one edge, as if I were holding it along one of the outer ribs. As mentioned by others, opponents are prone to being surprised by its relatively small dimensions. I must admit it is a horribly unauthentic use of a tessen, but it has been a great deal of fun and my experiences feel more authentic (from my perspective).
I do not have any photos of either fan handy - sorry. If you are truly curious, or would like to take the tessen out for a "test drive", and will be at Estrella, by all means look me up.
