after viewing the beautiful tanto that Otagiri Tatsuzou posted I got to thinking. How can I make a saya for my larger weapons, i.e. my katana and nodachi. these are two sepperate issues, as my katana is quite curved, and my nodachi has a regular thrusting tip that is 2" wide. I have seen a few people with split pvc pipe fittings that a sword would clip into, and was thinking of making a longer version for the nodachi, I want it to not only hold the weapons, but also to look like a saya when I am wielding the weapon, any ideas?

Cut a large piece of leather into a U shape a long as your no-datchi and make sure you fold it over to see that it fits, so fold before you cut. Mark your cut area with chalk, cut it out, glue the edges to gether and leave about 4-6 exra inches past the tsuba at the top so you can fold that back on itself and arround a 3-4 inch wide metal craft ring, this will form the mouth of your saya. You can find those at wal-mart. When the edges have been folded and glued punch holes allong the entire seam except for where you will fold the leather back and place your ring. Stitch the seam together to keep it from breaking, thats what the holes are for makes life way easier than fighting with two layers of leather and a dull needle. Fold the leather back over the ring at the desired length, glue the fold down, punch holes, stitch. I reccomend artificial sinew for the stitching because you can melt down your cuts and its not prone to break easily. Cut off any excess or overlap and there you go, a leather tsuba so when your sword it out you wont be jerked arround by people bumping into a hard PVC thing hanging off your side.

yes, an expensellant idea, lol, I think i will try it. I've always thought that the saya was an importand aesthetic accessory as well as a functional tool.

personaly I am just making velcro and leather frogs to hold my daisho...
if you are creating a floppy sheath so as to avoid people hitting your saya when your sword is drawn, I realy see no point in making one in the first place. as a second problem even most "stealth tips" I have seen are larger diameter than the ratan by a li'l bit. they would be difficult to feed in and out of most saya. another issue to look at is hot ductape (covering your blade) has a habit of wanting to stick against anything it is close to for long... this might not effect the tanto, but I suspect it could greatly increase the friction of the blade as it draws from your saya... this would throw off your whole iaido moment<G>
I also have to wonder what the marshals would say about a 3' long piece of PVC pipe being carried on the field... I know well the jagged edges it can create when hit hard with a piece of ratan
this does not meen I do not admire otogiri-dono's saya. I would love to see some of the bugs removed from making larger versions...

this does not meen I do not admire otogiri-dono's saya. I would love to see some of the bugs removed from making larger versions... After taking quite a pounding, my reinforced cardboard saya finally got squished. The worst damage occurred when I popped out of the line, speared a couple, continued into the opposite line, got my spear tangled up with some Knight with a coronet on his helm, and pulled the tanto out while tripping over some corpses that had accumulated between us. I did fall on the Knight and we both went down. (Knightfall?) I fell flat on my face two or three times during the course of this war. Danged menpo! I haven't written up any of the Saturday or Sunday battles, yet. Hmmm....

Jehanne says the namban phrase you want is "Requiescat in pace."
I'm more concerned about the menpo/kabuto failure.
