I had previously heard, and now confirmed that one special provisions for Atlantia's Spring Crown Tournament is that ANY thrusting will not be allowed.
This brings me to my dilema, I primarily fight with tachi (38 inch nagasa, 14.5 tsuka) and use thrusting as appropriate, though not quite as much as seems to be the trend here in northern Atlantia.
Since this is Atlantia, home to the "Typical Atlantian Thug" (tm) I will have to hit like a lead filled cinderblock, so I am considering constructing a new tachi to ensure delivery. Unfortuneatly the Society rules are superceeded by Atlantia's, so I am restricted to a maximum of an 18" tsuka... So my idea of a 45" nakago/20" tsuka is out. (unless I want to do it as an Atlantian polearm [padded])
So my questions are:
Do I go for blade length longer than my normal 38", or one shorter?
Do you find the shorter blades quicker and harder hitting in close, or is the longer blades better for generating power, and loss of speed minimal?
If you cannot thrust, is a longer tachi realy that much more effective in single combat?

Would you care to borrow the smackity fan? If it would pass inspection (No marshal in his right mind would allow it though) -Takeda He who belives Saionji's fan could be catagorized as a WMD

Unless you are a god with your tachi, you may want to use some kind of pole weapon. The only time I was ever killed in Crown by a great sword or pole weapon, the shot was dead flat, and everyone but the great photo missed it. Most of the fighters in crown are going to be VERY tough to beat with a great sword of any kind. Heater shields work very well vs just about any kind of great weapon. an average fighter with a heater, is going to beat a great weapon 80+% of the time. Unless you are a tachi god! Unless you beat all the shield fighters at practice, all the time, or you are just fighting for the experience, I would get another plan. However. I do like my katana/tachi sca weapons to be about the same length as the real thing. That means a 26-35 in nagasa. They work very well, are fast, and hit plenty hard. Look me up at TOC, and I will show you a two stick style, that has been great for me. Kinda late to learn something new for this crown, but for future. The no thrusting thing does not include great weapons, spears, (maybe facethrusts) but all others should be ok. I think it is just one handed weapons. Serious crown contenders, should have been practicing at crown level, for over a month now. This Crown tourney should be wide open though. Marc

Heater shields work very well vs just about any kind of great weapon. Your telling me Unfortuneatly I don't have time to. Thanks for the advice, and I do plan on seeking you out at TOC. Last fall's Crown, HRM Janos banned face thrusting from single handed weapons, there had been some controversy over what was good and what is not, so he banned it so it wouldn't be an issue in CT. (good logic) However the Acorn states, (and I received additional clarification tonight) that ALL thrusting will be banned. HRH Michael of Bedford, is an "Old School" and wants his tournament to reflect that. If I hear otherwise, I will let you know. Also for those interested formal letters of intent must be received by TRH's by April 15th. (Snail Mail Only) -Takeda

ALL thrusting? What if you fighting with a spear? Or pole arm? I guess it will be a Sword and board tourney. Practice hard with your tachi. I'll buy you dinner if you win crown with a greatsword. Marc

Hey Takeda, It was great to meet you in person at TOC. Good work. I forgot to show you my Yari/polearm. I was going to fight with it for a while, but got stuck in the Greatsword pool. Sorry i didn't get to play with you more. I was a tired old dog at the end of that day. We will have other chances. I will come and chear for you if I make it to Crown. Tomoyuki/Marc

While we at the YK are skilled in various weapons, (except S&B) a great many of us fight katana/tachi nearly exclusively. (Keep in mind that we are all skilled in fighting against S&B...) I have been fighting all forms for ages, (Except S&B) I do not think Katana inferior to any weapon, even in Great Lists like Crown. I prefer, in order (I think) Spear, Combat Archery, Naginata, Katana/Tachi, Daisho, Katana and fan, Tanto. Weapons have a place, and a time. The larger the list, the larger I like the weapon...but that is not an iron-clad rule. I have fought lists that were but 15 ftx15 ft with all of the above weapons, and I have run across the open tundra of Potrero with but an 18 inch wakizashi... One can turn an eggplant into a weapon if one thinks right.
The Yama Kaminari Ryu does not favor thrusting tips - our Sensei thinks thrusting is inelegant. We seem to have no real problem in tournament or war...tho there are times we use a thrusting tip... Use the length you are used to...I use a rattan length equal to the steel sword I carry and practice with. It makes no sence to me to have a "long sword" for this circumstance, and a "short" sword for that circumstance. One fights with the weapons at hand...and must learn all of their possibilities.

It was great to finaly meet you as well Sir Tomoyuki, It was a pleasure talking with you and seeing your armor and swords.
The lists were weird all day long, There were a few people I was trying to fight, and it just happened that before I got up to them in the lists they would rotate out.
I wish there had been more opportunity to visit, and I am looking forward to seeing you at Crown.

One can turn an eggplant into a weapon if one thinks right. But where do you find the purple-black duct tape? ;D What generated the question was I needed to construct a new sword for crown since I did not want to rip my thrusting tip off my current tachi, which is longer than my steel swords but is mainly "scaled up" to accomidate the diffrence in my hand size with gauntlets. I had decided this at a fighter practice, and while discussing it received a bunch of opinions as to what my new sword should be. I figured since there was a number of people on this list who fight with a katana all the time, It would be a good place to inquire. It turns out my original reason for asking has become irrelevant, his Majesty has now decreed "Although it was our original intent to disallow all thrusting, after consultation with the members of the Chivalry and others," that only face thrusting is prohibited. Thank you for the input thought, it is sound advice. As a matter of fact I have cut some new blanks to make into swords that are even more reasonable in length. -Takeda
