Hello every one,
Sorry to just hop into the forum without an introduction or anything, but I'm pretty sure that this is the right place for my questions. I've recently picked up SCA rapier combat and I've been fiddling around with the idea of incorporating the jitte as a parry and sword catch. I've ran the idea past our rapier martial and he has no problem with it as long and I use a baton type or specially made fencing dagger/weird quillions. Any suggestions on techniques or information sources? Know any places for a hard wood practice jitte ( i want to stay away from the steel or iron ones)? Will this work?
BTW, Hey otagiri!

some of the originals WERE hardwood. The catch was an iron ring with a hook tha slid down into place.

that would be a rigid parry device if you are authorized for such. and I would reccomend making the tine spacing large enough so as not to impeed the tip of your opponants weapon from becoming entangled... it will probably still get bounced by the marshals due to the likelyhood of snagging the tip of a weapon being so high...
on the other hand a samurai of the kato line if I recall correctly (or maybe his given name was kato) had a full length shin-shinto tsuba on his schlager, and fought it as a katana while wearing vintage kimono I have some pics on my laptop waiting for me to figure out how to get them on the web<G>. he wore hakama, kosode, and haroi (sorry for misspelling, but I am getting more than a li'l tired) for legal protection, he hqad a triplet mask with hood attached, and leather gloves, plus one layer was modified so as to cover the chest fully to well under the hood though I do not recall which layer.
find a marshal who is comfortable with working with you to develope it properly... possibly a skilled fencer who does not mind being the guinny pig for an experimental device...

I have seen jutte with two tines, they looked exactly like main gauche and the use was basically the same.

You may find this book useful. I occasionally see it on the shelf at Barnes & Nobles. www.amazon.com/Taiho-Jutsu-Law-Order-Age-Samurai/dp/0804835365The tines are meant to catch a blade. A twist of the wrist can lock the blade in place. I'm very surprised that you have found fencers willing to let their blades be caught and torqued.

Most of them don't seem to have a problem with it as its not much different than any of our local fighters who use the hilts of their swords to catch and lock. One of our Fighters who has a Scottish basket hilt from darkwood uses the blade catch on the hilt to great effect, but even the normal quillions work.

Many apologies for coming into this late, and more apologies for my complete lack of knowledge on anything japanese. However, I have a small amount of knowledge on light combat. I hope that I can beg to be forgiven for this intrusion, then.
Killian, check with your local KRM. I would beg to advise you that you may want to restrict this technique to the heavy rapier or 'schlager' field, where it's largely permitted to trap a blade. Please do have consideration for your opponent's hardware, as jitte are rumored to well, work.
If my opinion could carry any weight, I might say that this technique is possible, if one is cautious, virtuous, and wise; I am certain that you are all of these things. I wish you nothing but the best of all outcomes.

Thank you Baron, It was all intended for Schlager. I have a prototype in the works and as far as Baron Lloyd is concerned, as long as he can take a thorough look at it, and ensure its safely constructed and used, He's cool with it, among my other stupid ideas.
Also, Baron, PM.
