This is a hotoke-dou made from black barrel plastic and painted with Krylon Fusion paint. The pattern is from Bryant's sengokudaimyo.com site. The kamon is Hatakeyama. I'm calling it my hoteru-dou since it was made mostly in my hotel. More pics at ... rhinohide.cx/katchuu/hoterudo/

The kote fabric pattern is self developed. The shino-gote pattern is also from Bryant's sengokudaimyo.com site. Either I did not size the pattern well or I just don't like shino-gote. The kote on the right uses a self-developed pattern based on a Sir Haroun (Outlands) bracers.

Once again, patterns for the shino-suneate provided by sengokudaimyo.com. The fabric base pattern is self developed.

Self developed guruwa pattern. The use of plates on both the front and rear are to cover SCA combat rules.

And put it all together ... Unfortunately, I don't have with me the shitagi, obi, hakama, tabi, and waraji I made during my previous hotel visit. More pics at ... rhinohide.cx/katchuu/hoterudo/

Things not done: - The watagami are too short, they need to be longer.
- I would like to add kikko to the suneate.
- There are no hikiawase (closing cords).
- I would like to add kohire.
- The takahimo (collar cords) need a sliding ? to hold the loop closed against the toggle.
- Guruwa needs padding.
- The dou interior needs padding.
Lessons learned: - For a two piece dou with 7 kusazuri, make three wide ones for front and four thin ones for rear.
- The shino-gote seems sized wrong.
- I won't be happy until I get chain (gusari) on the kote and suneate.
- Even for a simple hotoke-dou, cutting the kanagu mawari as seperate pieces to be relaced on would make it more form fitting.
- Holes for one of the guruwa plates were cut wrong. Check twice - drill once.
- Same goes for the very bottom set of holes on the kusazuri; they should not be there.
- Hmmm. I put the kohaze (toggles) on the watagami cord and not on the front of the dou cords. Now why did I do that?

Very nice looking. The colors are great and seem to correspond with the rest of the kit. I am envious.

I'd love to comment, but my browser is refusing to let me access your server right now. Tony If anyone else is having this trouble, please open a "commnad window" and run the following command: nslookup rhinohide.cx and tell me (IM or posted here) what the answer is. I think that there are some nameservers with bad address out there. My host moved recently. Sorry for the trouble. Thanks Otagiri

Not so bad. One constructive suggestion, though.
If possible, hammer the center ridge into the splints (assuming they're metal, if something else, use a different technique). There may be some flat splints out there, but I don't think I've seen them.
It would help the look considerably.
Let us know how the paint holds up.

As for the paint holding up, this whole project was originally conceived to test the durability of Krylon Fusion. Now if I can just get back home to get to a few fighter practise You might be interested in this link: www.rhinohide.cx/tousando/plastic/fusion.html

The images are showing now. Two words: suh WEET. That's how you do something with a barrel to give it a more Japanese-y look. I like the color choice, particularly. The only problem with doing something with large plates (like a hotoke do) from a barrel is that you are restricted in the amount of "dishing" you can get out of it (as you noticed, I'm sure! ) but there's no reason that one can't make something more realistic looking (like this) by simply following real designs and patterns. Bra-frikkin-vo! Tony
