Alright, while serving some time in TX, i was introduced to the SCA by an army buddy. I have always been interested in the fuedal(read: mostly sengoku/edo periods) japanese era. I am returning back to colorado springs shortly, and will meet up with my "liaison" then. I'm looking for a "hint" as to how to get started. So far I have some sketches for a dou that involve the plastic kozane designed by effingham. I'm wondering if these would be good to tryfor a beginner with no armouring experience and little excess cash? I would prefer to do most work on my own kit, as i like working with my hands. Any help y'all can provide would be outstanding. thanks...

Colorado Springs? Have a got a surprise for you - hehehe.... Irrashaimase! Welcome to the board. I am currently on travel in Virginia but will be returning home this week - only to pack up the horses and answer the King's muster. But after that ... Also, Ryokai-dono is from the Springs, Ishikawa-dono from Pueblo, and Masahide-dono from Denver. It's beginning to look a lot like a war band! As a beginner armourer, you just need to decide if you want to work in plastic or metal. I am making the transition to mostly metal work - but would be happy to help you in either. Tools, patterns, and material. Whether you work in metal or plastic, you should be using patterns as period as possible. A very good start is to read up on AJ Bryant's site. Mr. Bryant's experience comes from work in actual Japanese armor shops: www.sengokudaimyo.com/katchuand I put this up to help organize beginners (and myself for that matter): rhinohide.cx/tousando/yoriakuAnd of course, take time to browse the armor here... that's what it's here for!

wow, i had no idea there were so many in the springs area. I have printed up the entire "book" of bryants on armour, and have read it multiple times. a very wise man indeed. Hopefully the army lets me return home soon. it looks like im shooting for the end of feb... hopefully... Im thinking about plastic kozane, the ones from noble possibly, as i have no experience with metals, 'cept for arc welding shit together in high school. I figure plastic kozane for the majority, with metal for certain parts. Your help is greatly appreciated...

Why ... I am looking to learn how to arc weld stuff together! Particularly, I am thinking of chins on menpo masks, welding metal bands to make dou (easier or harder than countersinking rivets?), and elbow cops.
If money is a major factor, you might find it prohibitive to build an entire suit out of Effingham kozane. Maybe just the dou ... or just the top lames of the dou. Anyway, you can price it out. They are great to work with - all the exact same size and shape and prepunched holes!
I am looking forward to meeting you.

hooah, i would like to try that... and at last check i was still pretty good at arc welding... so i could help there. are mempos/somen hard to make? i would prefer to fight in a somen than a bargrill... I do believe a meeting of the minds could benefit us both! ;D

Why ... I am looking to learn how to arc weld stuff together! Why didn't you mention this earlier Otagiri-dono? I too would be happy to work with you in your persuit of welding perfection. I've worked on and off with welding equipment for the past four years or so. Everything from Argon type MIG, TIG, all the way down to Atcytline Gas as well as MAPP Gas, though I have little desire to go back to the majority of gas type welding. As for you MrMusashi, its good to see that we will be graced with your company! I'm glad to hear that you are to be let out earlier than expected. I most assuredly look forward to meeting you.
