I guess I'll add mine, too. Ignore the kabuto. I'll be converting a bascinet to a momonari or shiinari. I cheated a bit to compensate for instability I've had in the past. I basically made a heavy leather hotoke do, and laced 16 ga steel plates to it. I'm adding extra edging to the plates by stripping 16 ga wire jackets, splitting them and gluing them along the exposed edges. Still debating on a steel or leather kusazuri. Some other bits: Manchira/Kata-ate (still unsure) Kusari for the kote. Old pic. I've added more, so the plates I'm adding to it measure 1"x2". They're cut, punched and the paint is drying outside as I type. This weekend, I cut out the fabric for the kote. My current suit for boffer fighting... ignore the white belt: (02-09-2005 Started adding plates)

THat's a pretty sweet set up.
Don't change that kabuto. It's got personality, and looks really good.

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, the visor/hood section is made of heavy leather. Ahhh... boffers.

Nice mail!
What are the 'fabrics' on the kohire(?) ? I can't figure out the construction of that.

Seiichiro-dono, I rather like the kabuto - it looks like a variant of the "oki tenugui" styles. The overall effect of the entire harness is good. Nice job!

Otagiri-dono- Thanks! I'll be attaching the small plates shortly. I really need to give the kusari a good light spraying soon. The fabric section is basically just a U-shape, with a standing collar I made separately and attached. It's just a bunch of washers sewn to a cutout of denim with a patterned polyester surface at the moment. Once I'm finished with the lacing, I'll add a cotton liner and edge with bias tape. Date-dono- Yeah, I really like the look of oki tenugui kabuto. Not to mention, much easier to make. I can never get my plates for a multiplate hachi right. There's a picture floating about of this one kabuto. I'm not sure if it's an oki tenugui or not, but it's very similar to the one on the left here: I can't find it anymore, but I saw it, fell in love with it and started my attempts to make it in leather. A mechanic friend of mine has offered to help me with any metalworking so I just may have to take him up on that to do it in steel sometime. Is there anything I need to consider to make it legal for heavy weapons? -Seiichiro

Newbie building his first 'grotesque' kabuto. Next - sculpting the ears from Mr. PotatoeHead (this is no reference to you Seiichiro-dono; I was just surprised by the appearance of that middle helm.

You can check the link below for SCA armor and fighting conventions. It might be best to start with a steel kabuto, as minimum requirements are at least a 16 ga. steel, and there are stringent rules about how things are put together. www.sca.org/officers/marshal/combat/armored/index.htmlOtagiri-dono, I have seen that particular kawari bachi in a book specifically about kawari kabuto. I laughed with your "New-bee" armorer pic! Date
