after careful examination, the kozane from noble plastics maybe outside my price range as of yet.
I would like to know if there are any plastics(hdpe, abs, or kydex) that come in brown( i believe eff referred to it as "russet brown".) As i would like to lace it kebiki odoshi in orange and white. I would appreciate any info regarding tjis matter. thanks.
Also, it may not belong here, but i just returned home to fountain, co and am wondering how to go about "kicking off" my journey in the sca. any info here would also be appreciated. thank you.

Makiwara, stealing her friend Jehanne's chatelaine hat sayeth: You're in the Kingdom of the Outlands. Have you been to www.sca.org and www.outlands.org/ yet? The Outlands website should have a way for you to figure out which local group is closest to you. Look for contact information for someone called a "chatelaine." That person is your newcomer liaison and can tell you how to get involved. Going to local meetings and practices to meet folks is the best place to get started. There are also at least two Outlanders on this board who may be able to help you. Enjoy the journey. You get to meet the coolest people in the SCA. Makiwara

I have checked the outlands site. I do believe that dragonsspine is closest. I just am not sure what to do in regards to getting started... Oh, they have a NICE website. Don't feel overwhelmed. www.dragonsspine.org/index.htmFirst, go to the link for Officers and find the Chatelaine. You can drop her an email and she can answer your questions. The Calendar link lists local events and practices and if you click on the calendar date it'll give you time, location and map. There's no reason you can't turn up at a fight practice, introduce yourself and observe and ask questions. You'll find that most SCA folks are pretty friendly and willing to share what they love. Wow, they did a beautiful job on this website - and it looks like there's a lot of stuff to get involved with in your area. Good luck, Makiwara

Yes, you are in the Barony of Dragonsspine ... once counted among the lands of the Genji who flourished in this Kingdom. But the Genji have faded and new families are rising amidst the mountains. Fighter Practise is indoors near downtown Co Springs. If you click the map on this page, you will be sent to a Yahoo map which you can then scale outwards. www.dragonsspine.org/directions/fighterpractice.htmYou can PM or email from my profile information. I will be at practise Thursday. If you wish, I will be happy to give you my phone number, just contact me first. As to brown plastic ... I have only seen it in certain garbage cans. It can come with a nice 'pebbled' surface similar to a certain style of lacquering, but it is not heavy enough to use as armour. You could glue this to another heavier plastic. You could paint black plastic brown. There is the Krylon Fuzion paint designed for plastic and some plastic primers. Come to practise and you will see the painted hoteru-dou. Welcome Home, Soldier!

i have used the krylon fusion paint and it has chipped off in small places. i recommend using plastics primer first then painting it with normal paint. it works best for me. wither one u do let it sit for about 1 - 2 days to dry (i found this out the hard way) otherwise it will scratch off

Konnichi wa, tomodachi. For what it is worth, kydex can come in a nice rich brown also, but it is a little on the dark side, with various surface finishes on one side.
As mentioned elsewhere on various threads, kydex can be expensive - but it is still cheaper than the Nobel PLastic kozane.
A 4x8 sheet of kydex will, for the most part, net you two complete harnesses - perhaps going in on a sheet with a friend will help (or making and selling the second harness to recoup the costs of the first! ;-) ) Plenty of people need armor.

Date Extra armor plastic is Budda's way of telling you to hire more retainers. Keep doing this and suddenly you're worth 15 or 20 koku a year. Which means you'll need better armor. Which means you'll have extra plastic. Which means...

date - dono, you mentioned Krylex comes in a nice brown, do you believ this color would work well with kebiki odoshi done in orange and white? Or would the brown come in too dark?
and if the dou is kebili, are the sode and kusazuri also kebiki?

Musashi-dono, The fun part of Japanese armor is that it was "possible" for harnesses to have different aspects... It was Possible for a dou to be laced in kebiki, and the rest to be laced sugake... The brown I have seen for the kydex is a medium brown, sorta dark, but with kebiki odoshi should look outstanding. Especially if you use a good bright red for the hishinui! Date

much appreciated date-dono...
few more questions, please bear with me wonderful members of the board...
1) could i get the supplier of said brown kydex date, if you know it...
2) if the dou, sode and kusazuri are kydex, what would be a good guage/type of steel to cover the kanagu mawari(sp) and haiodate, suneate, and kote plates?
3) anyone ever try to lace a mogami dou in kebiki? will this as a first armour drive me to the brink of insanity?
4)how does one bend and shape kydex? I am a rather small guy and would like to have my armour fit the closest to me...
5) lastly... what would someone suggest to a new person to armouring in regards to gauntlets and kabuto?
whew.. this got long... please excuse my long windedness... any help is greatly appreciated...

Extra armor plastic is Budda's way of telling you to hire more retainers. Keep doing this and suddenly you're worth 15 or 20 koku a year. Which means you'll need better armor. Which means you'll have extra plastic. Which means... Exactly. As a 100 koku samurai of the sengoku jidai, I am expected to bring 1 or 2 armoured retainers to the field. Note that this is not even 'SCA knighthood' status which I equate with mounted samurai. Such mounted men are rated at about 250 koku and would be expected to bring two 100 koku samurai to the field with them. My first 'extra suit' is the hoteru-dou. No sooner was it done than Ryokai-dono appeared to wear it. My second and third are not scheduled to be completed before May 23 (as an Armour Archive challenge), but already new bushi are arriving. Must armour faster.

This is an open offer ... if anyone else cares to join us, we will have an informal Japanese discussion Sunday.
